Chapter 13

Several months had passed. The cold bitter winter is again knocking on the door.

Sho spent more time with Jun at work. Jun is a smart young man and a fast learner. Sho didn't realize that before, not that he paid much attention to him back then anyway. He began to enjoy working with Jun, teaching him reporting and journalism techniques. Something that could at least temporarily get his mind off his sadness and emptiness.

Jun was surely happy with the time that he got to spend with Sho. He was cautious around Sho. He tried to refrain himself from going overboard and do anything Sho would not feel uncomfortable with and Sho knew it. He sometimes told jokes to cheer Sho up when his senior was down. They also spend time off work sometimes, having drinks, watching soccer games or just for walks. Jun would consider them dates, but Sho wouldn't go that far yet. He had accepted the fact that the love he had for Ohno could only be in his memories, but that didn't mean someone could take Ohno's place in his heart.

It was this day one year ago that Sho broke up with Ohno. This day was just as cold, if not colder. Sho was sitting at his desk staring at the stack of papers in front of him. Even though he tried so hard to concentrate, his mind is somewhere else, back to one year ago.

“Happy Birthday, Sho-kun” Jun put a small box on Sho’s desk and gave a gentle pat on Sho’s shoulder, which brought Sho back from his unpleasant recollection.

“Thank you, it’s really not necessary.” Sho was not really in the mood of celebrating his birthday anymore, not after what happened the year before. But he knew he would be reminded of that day every year for the rest of his life.

“Come on, it’s special day for you. Let’s celebrate.” Jun looked up and said loudly “Happy hour to celebrate Sho-kun’s birthday after work. My treat.”

Lots of hoorays and cheers were heard, plus birthday greetings to Sho. But he really didn’t feel like celebrating. The painful memory is still too fresh for him.

“Thank you for all your kind and warm wishes. But I’m kinda tired so I just want to go home and rest. May be some other time, OK? It will be my treat then.”

“Sure, get some rest then, Sho-kun.” His colleagues were very understanding.

“Are you feeling alright?” Jun was concerned when he heard Sho said he’s tired. He noticed Sho was pretty out of it the whole day.

“I’m fine, just a little tired.” Sho didn’t want to be too indifferent to Jun. He had been a good friend to Sho afterall. “Thank you for your gift.”

“How about dinner, just the two of us? At least let me do something special for you.”

Sho was a little hesitated at first but decided to accept Jun's invitation. He didn't really want to be alone on this day after all.

“Alright then, but nothing fancy, promise?” Jun sometimes brought Sho to these expensive places to eat because he knew Sho loves the food, which made Sho felt a little uneasy.

“Promised! Let’s go after work. I know just the right place.” Jun went off happily.

Sho understood Jun’s feelings. He appreciated Jun for being so considerate and not pressuring him and always trying to cheer him up. He wanted to open his heart for Jun, he did try. But till this moment, all he can offer to Jun is friendship, and it made him feel really bad.

It was not until they arrived at the doorstep did Sho found out that the right place Jun was talking about was his apartment.

Sho hesitated about going in. It's not that he didn't trust Jun, but he knew he was emotionally vulnerable and being alone with Jun might not be such a good idea.

Jun went in first. Seeing Sho still at the doorstep, he turned back and called him. “Come on in, Sho-kun. What are you waiting for? I won't eat you.”

Jun's words made Sho even more embarrassed, but he figured Jun didn't mean what they seemed to mean. Fortunately Jun already went inside and didn't see Sho's abashed look.

Sho reluctantly went inside. Deep down inside him, he does want some company tonight.

Jun cooked a really delicious meal for Sho. They drank a little wine and chat. Sho was seemingly more relaxed and even gave some laughter during their conversations.

“Sho-kun, do you believe in fate?” Jun asked when they were sitting in the living room couch after dinner.

Sho slowly nodded.

“I don't.” Jun said in confident. “I believe I can create my own future. Nobody except me can determine my path.”

“Jun-kun, I admire your courage and determination. But sometimes no matter how hard you tried, whatever is not yours will never be yours.” Sho sighed. If there really was fate, it had been playing him like a puppet.

“Don't be so pessimistic. Good faith can overcome any obstacles.” Upon saying that, Jun lean over to Sho, put his hands on Sho's shoulders, and kissed him on the lips.

For a moment Sho instinctively resisted Jun's kiss slightly. But he really missed the feeling of being wanted and pampered, so he did loosen his guard and let the kiss went on for a few more seconds. Then his conscious took back control and he pushed Jun away, confused about what he's feeling.

“Jun-kun, I can't....” Sho turned away, avoiding eye contact with Jun.

Jun took Sho's hand into his and said, “Sho-kun, you are a wonderful person. You deserve someone who treasured you and care for you. Let me give you the love you need.” Upon saying that Jun took Sho into a gentle embrace.

Sho didn't resist the hug. These warm and secured feelings were something he missed terribly. He closed his eyes and allowed himself to enjoy the moment of comfort.

Jun took Sho home later that night. He was happy that his relationship with Sho had taken a small step forward and Sho had opened up to him somewhat. As he believed, he could create a future of him and Sho with his own effort.

Wah~ even though Jun is doing everything he can for Sho... I still believe that Sho and Ohno will be together somehow.
Heh~ I think it's interesting how Jun thinks that with his own effort he can create a future with him and Sho. The way he thinks seems off. Like, he expects Sho to come around and love him back in the end, but what if Sho doesn't?

Sorry for my rambling, thanks for sharing :D

Wah, I'm conflicted! I know Jun means well, and he's being extremely sweet to Sho. But with Sho still feeling so sad inside, and the unresolved truth between Yama... gosh, I hope they will eventually be able to make up. No matter what, the tragedy won't be forgotten that easily.
