Chapter 5

“Mama, Sho and I are going to see a movie tonight. We may be late so don't wait up.” Ohno told his mother after dinner.
“Just the two of you? Will others join you? May be some girls?” His father seemed to want to lure something else out of him.
Ohno was not dumb, he knew what his father was getting at. “It's our date, of course only us.”
“OK, have fun.” Ohno's mother said gently.
Sho's place was on the third floor of an apartment complex not far from the university. He opened the door and went inside and Ohno followed. Other than the bathroom which has enclosed door, the bed, dining area and kitchen were pretty much squeezed into a room no bigger than twenty square meters.
“Please wait while I packed up. It won't take long.” Sho said before going off and pulled his clothes out from the standing dresser next the the bed and started putting them in a big duffle bag.
Ohno looked around the room. It was at most half of the size of his own bedroom, barely large enough for one person, let alone a family.
“You don't live with your parents?” Ohno asked casually.
Sho paused for a moment, then continued his packing, without answering Ohno's question.
Ohno saw a picture on top of the kitchen counter. He picked it up and looked closer. In the picture was a woman and a little boy around nine or ten years old. They were smiling happily. Ohno could tell that the little boy was Sho. He was just about to open his mouth and asked about about it when suddenly a hand came out of nowhere and grabbed the picture from his hand.
“Hey, what was that? I was just looking.” Ohno protested to Sho, who put the picture in his duffle bag and continued to pack things from the kitchen.
“Do you know it's rude to touch other people's personal belongings?” Sho said bluntly. He then put a box of things by the genkan. “I'm done.”
Ohno looked at the genkan area and there were two big duffle bags and a small box with some pots and pants inside. “That's it? That's all your belongings?”
“That’s everything. Oh, and the expensive suit you bought yesterday. I didn’t want to put it in the bag.” Sho pointed to the suit hanging by the doorway. “I will come back tomorrow and terminate the lease with the manager. Let’s go.”
The next few days were a little uncomfortable for Sho but went by without any incident. Sho slept on the sofa every night and put the pillow and blanket back on the bed every morning to make it looked like both were sleeping on the bed. He didn’t get much sleep the first couple of nights as he was still unsure of the whole situation. After that he started to feel more at ease sleeping in the same room as Ohno and could finally get a good night sleep. He left pretty early in the morning to go to work because he needed extra commute time as the Ohno villa was far from the business area. Ohno’s mother had offered to let their chauffeur drove him but Sho had gracefully declined. Ohno was still his usual self during the day, slept in till around noon, ate lunch and headed out to have fun with friends. He would be back home by dinner time when Sho was around to spend time with his lover in front of his parents.
This night after dinner Ohno and his father was watching his favorite comedy show on television in the living room. Sho joined them for a while, sitting close to Ohno and let the older man wrapped his arm around him. After the few days, these kinds of cuddling gestures, though phony, were not as awkward as they were at the beginning.
After a while Ohno’s father retreated back to his study. Sho waited for Ohno to retract his arm, and when that didn’t happen, he stood up and headed back to the room. He didn’t like comedies much anyway. When he passed by the master bedroom, he heard a big “bang” sound coming from inside. The door was opened, so he turned his head and looked inside. He saw Ohno’s mother trying to lift a box up which seemed to be too heavy for her. He guessed that just now the box must have dropped from her hands from her previous attempt. Instinctively he went inside the room to help, although he regretted his action as soon as he stepped inside the room. Going into someone’s bedroom without invitation was like intruding. But it’s too late to go back.
“Can I help?” He reluctantly asked.
“Sho, oh, good that you’re here. Yes, can you put this box back to the top shelf?” Ohno’s mother said.
“Of course.” Sho replied politely and lift the box up to the top shelf. He could see that the box was full of old photo albums. “Is there anything else I can help with?” He was actually happy to help Ohno’s mother.
“Thank you. It’s so nice of you to come in and help me. Satoshi would just walk right by.” Ohno’s mother found something in Sho that she couldn’t find in her son. “Would you mind stay a little longer? There’s something I want to show you.”
“I’d love to, if I’m not disturbing you.” Being around Ohno’s mother was actually the most enjoyable moments he had in the house.
Ohno’s mother took Sho’s hand and lead them both to sit down on the sofa. She had a photo album in her hand which she slowly opened. Inside was lots of baby and kids pictures. Some had Ohno’s parents in them when they were much younger. It’s obvious that they were Ohno’s pictures.
“Did Satoshi ever show you these pictures?”
Sho shook his head but his eyes didn’t leave the album. He had to admit that Ohno was a cute kid. He was smiling so happily in almost every one of them, except for one when he was crying very hard. Ohno was about seven or eight years old then. It was a close up which Sho could see clearly that both of Ohno’s front teeth were missing. He was amused.
Ohno’s mother saw Sho’s attention at the picture and laughed. “Ah, this picture. There is a story behind this picture. Do you want to hear it?”
Without waiting for Sho to answer, Ohno’s mother already started to tell the story.
“Satoshi was about seven years old and was losing his baby teeth. Both of his front teeth had been loose for a long time but didn’t come out. They were bothering him like crazy but he wouldn’t let us take him to the dentist. So one night while he’s asleep, his papa opened his mouth and knocked out those two teeth. Satoshi was such a deep sleeper that he didn’t feel a thing. You should probably know that by now.” She looked at Sho with a smile, then continued. “The next morning he found that the teeth came out and asked where his teeth had gone. We told him that he must have swallowed them, we even tried the tooth fairy story but he demanded that he wanted his teeth back. Gosh, how could we have known that he had wanted his teeth back, so we threw them away. He continued to cry and throw tantrum for a good half day.”
Sho couldn’t help but chuckled. He didn’t expect Ohno would do such cute thing, even when he was little. Ohno always put up a cool front to him. “That was cute.” He blurted out.
“It was, wasn’t it?” Ohno’s mother smile again, seemed to be enjoying the moments in the past. “He used to be such a sweet kid. Well, I’m not saying he isn’t sweet now, but he has become so – independent, I guess.”
Sho could feel the sadness in her voice. She was such a loving mother and he didn’t know why Ohno was so resisted to be closer to her. He was somewhat pissed at Ohno for that. He would give anything, anything at all, to have her as his mother. But he could hardly find any words to comfort her.
However, Sho knew he could not let himself to get too attached. As much as he loved to spend time with her, he knew he would have to leave someday. He wouldn’t allow himself to feel the separation agony all over again. “I better go now. It’s getting late.”
“Of course, I’m sorry for keeping you.” Ohno’s mother loved the chat he had with Sho.
“No, it was nice talking with you, Mrs. Ohno, really. Good night.” Sho was about to get up and leave when Ohno’s mother opened her arms inviting a hug from his son’s lover again. Sho gladly accepted the hug before leaving the room. But the more he felt her kindness and love, the worse he hated himself for lying to her.
While Sho and Ohno’s mother were having the nice chat, another conversation took place at another end of the house.
“Satoshi, I need to talk to you.” Ohno’s father came out of his study and called for his soon who’s still watching television in the living room.
“Just one minute. The program is almost finished.” Ohno was still keeping his eyes on the television while he responded.
“Now!” Ohno’s father raised his voice, which got his son’s full attention.
“OK, I’m coming, geez.” Ohno turned off the television and followed his father back to the study.
“Close the door.” His father demanded. The solemn tone made Ohno somewhat uneasy. Why does Papa sound so serious? Did he find out about Sho? Ohno closed the door and waited for his father to speak.
“Did you pay for Sho’s tuition?” Ohno’s father raised the question to his son.
“Well, yes, I did.” Ohno answered, but couldn’t tell what his father is getting at.
“Did he ask you to?” The interrogations continued.
“No, he didn’t. I offered to pay.” He told the truth. “Why? You checked up on me?”
“It’s still my money you’re spending, you know. I gave you money to spend doesn’t mean I don’t care how you spent it.”
Now Ohno knew his father had been checking on his spending all along. Although his father had every right to do so, it’s still irritating to know someone had been looking over your shoulder.
“So what’s the big deal here? Why did you bring this up suddenly?” Ohno still didn’t understand what point was his father trying to make.
“500,000 yen is not a small amount, son. Why did you offer to pay for him? You’ve been together for, what, few months, and he’s already using that much of your money?”
“He was short in cash so I just offered. Shouldn’t I help my lover?” Ohno argued, but he couldn’t tell the whole truth to his father.
“Short in cash? Did he tell you why? He had been paying tuition on his own for three years but short in cash all of a sudden when he became your lover? Don’t you think it’s a little too coincidental?” His father explained his skepticism.
“What are you getting at, Papa? What coincidental? I don’t care how he paid before. He had difficulty paying this semester so I offered to help. That’s all. Why do you have to make everything so complicated?” Ohno was becoming defensive.
“Because things may not be as simple as you thought, my son. Did his parents pay for him before? Do you even know what his parents do for a living? Have you met them?”
“I thought so. There are many people out there who like to take advantage of others. You are too young and sometimes naive. You trust people too easily.” Ohno’s father liked his first impression of Sho, but he was in the business world for so long and had seen so many different kinds of people. He knew some people would do anything for money, including getting close to and even marrying someone for the sake of their wealth. He didn’t want his son to be fooled and get hurt.
“No, Papa. Sho is not that kind of person. He is not going after our money. He – loves – me.” That’s all Ohno could tell his father.
“OK, Satoshi, if you say so. I hope I’m wrong. Just be careful and keep what I said in mind.” Ohno’s father didn’t argue further. He did not have evidence that Sho was after their money, but he would not put in his trust that easily. He was bounded to find out the truth, one way or another.

This makes me want to learn more about Sho's parents.
And Ohno's parents thinking that Sho is after their money is ironic considering the whole situation between them.
Can't wait to see what will happen next.
Thanks for sharing. :D

I'm still really excited for them to get together and get over this problem on both sides. Ohno's dad is so noisy and I want to know more about Sho! And hopefully Ohno will become less bratty, haha. ^__^

Seriously, Ohno's parents had completely different opinions abt Sho...

I think it's completely natural for Ohno's father to doubt Sho, considering how his son can be quite reckless in things like these.

It's so sweet how Mrs Ohno was so warm and welcoming toward Sho. Her showing his son's baby photos... is such a mother-in-law thing to do <3

Like everyone else, I'm alos curious about Sho's background, the way he's been dodging the topic everytime it came up... just makes it more suspicious.

“No, Papa. Sho is not that kind of person. He is not going after our money. He – loves – me.” That’s all Ohno could tell his father.
-- You don't know how much I look forward for this to come true eventually.

I love how Ohno's parents each see Sho in a different light. Ohno's mother just thinks that Sho is sweet. Ohno's father is worried that Sho is just after money.
If they only knew that Ohno is "renting" Sho as his lover...

I'm so curious about Sho's family situation.

Can't wait to see what happens next. Thanks for sharing :D
