[Yama fic] Surprise! (Ohno birthday fic)

Title: Surprise!
Pairing: Yama  (Ohno x Sho)
Rating: G
Genre: fluff, romance, friendship
Summary: Sho planned a surprise birthday party for his lover Ohno
. How will it turned out?

It's going to be perfect! No, it has to be perfect!
Sho is at his desk trying to draw his own birthday card for his new lover, Satoshi Ohno. They have been together for a few months now. Though still living in their own apartments, they do stay overnight in each other's place sometimes and spend time together. It will be Ohno's birthday next week. It is the first birthday since they are together and Sho plans to give a surprise party to his lover.
His plan is to have their friend Jun taking Ohno to fishing in the morning when he goes to Ohno's apartment to decorate and prepare food. When they come back and open the door, Ohno will be greeted by the surprise party. He is sure that Ohno will be very happy as he once told Sho he never had a proper birthday party all his life.
“Are you sure you don't want to go fishing with me tomorrow?” Ohno asked Sho the night before his birthday. He wants to spend his birthday with Sho, but the fishing invitation from Jun was too hard to resist. So he wants his lover to go with him, killing two birds in one stone. He has no clue that Jun's taking him fishing was Sho's idea to get him away from his apartment.
“No, thanks, Satoshi. Enjoy yourself. I'll wait for you to come back with a big catch.” Sho carefully turned down the invitation, but tried not to show any excitement.
The next day Jun takes Ohno out to fishing as planned. Sho gets up early in the morning as well. He didn't get much sleep the night before out of anxieties. He quickly goes to the market to buy the ingredients for the food.
“Nino, I'm almost done with grocery shopping. Let's meeting at Satoshi's place in half an hour. Aiba is picking up the cake before going. Remember to bring the baking pan.” Sho called his other friend Nino to help out with the preparation.
Nino is one of the three best friends Sho and Ohno have in common. Jun and Aiba are the other two. They are all members of a dancing club that they all joined the year before and have been very good friends since then. After realizing their friends' special feelings for each other a few months ago, Nino was the one who encouraged Ohno to confess to Sho, which brought them together.

After getting everything he needs, Sho almost uses every finger to carry all the bags of stuff he has. When he finally managed to arrive at Ohno's apartment without dropping any bag, Nino was already outside the apartment waiting.
“What took you so long? It's almost an hour since you called.” Nino complained.
“Sorry, I couldn't get a taxi, so I walked here.”
Seeing Sho all sweaty and panting from the long walk, Nino doesn't have the heart to say anything more. He can see how much this guy loves the older man.
After putting the bags by the front door and catches his breaths, Sho lift the corner of the door mat where Ohno usually places the spare key. But to his dismay, he finds nothing there.
“Where is it?” Sho looks and looks, even lifting the whole mat and searches every inch of space near the door, still nothing. “Oh no! Where is the key? He usually puts it here.” Sho started to panic. Without the key, they can't go into Ohno's apartment and his whole plan will go down the drain.
“Are you sure he puts it there?” Nino asked.
“Yes, I'm sure. I get the key from there to let myself in every time I come.” Sho blushed a little after saying that. He feels a little embarrassed every though Nino is well aware of their relationship.
“So what do we do now?” Nino looked at the bags of stuff Sho bought and gave an uncertain look to the panicking man.
“Let me try the manager. He saw me come home with Satoshi a few times. May be he'll recognize me and let us in.”
Sho went to the unit where the manager was living which was right behind Ohno's. Ohno had shown him one time saying that the manager's dog was very annoying and barked all the time.
Knock, knock.
The door opens and Sho sees a middle aged man with a big belly and a cigarette in his hand.
“Excuse me. Can you let us in to Satoshi Ohno's apartment? We are planning a surprise birthday party for him but couldn't find his spare key. You saw me came home with him a few times before. You recognize me, don't you?” Sho tried to say politely. He knew it's a far fetch to ask the manager to let them in, but he has no other option.
The man looks at Sho from head to toe, seems to be trying to recall his face. Judging by the puzzling face on him, Sho doesn't think he is recognized.
“Who are you? Are you Ohno-san's family?” the manager asked Sho.
“Ermm, not exactly. I'm his b – friend.” Sho doesn't know how he should address himself as related to Ohno.
“I'm sorry, but I can't just let you in unless I get permission from Ohno-san. I can call him and ask him first.”
“No! You can't. If he knows, it won't be a surprise anymore.”
“I'm sorry I can't help you then.” the manager goes back to his apartment and closed the door in front of Sho.
“Now what?” Nino is getting impatient.
“Don't rush me, Nino. Let me think.” Sho wanted so much for the party to be perfect and he is already experiencing an awful start. He feels like he wants to cry but he is not giving up just yet.
“Let's have the party at my place then. It's smaller than Satoshi's but it will still do. I'll call Jun and ask him to bring Satoshi back to my place when they come back. Let's go. ”
Sho and Nino hurry back to Sho's apartment. They quickly clean up the place a bit and start to prepare for the food when Aiba called.
“Sho-kun, I'm so sorry. When I ordered the cake, I put down the wrong pick up date – tomorrow. I'm so so sorry. I'm so careless. I want to buy a ready made one, but the baker said all of the cakes were reserved.” Aiba said with a trembling voice.
“No, you don't. Are you serious? Oh no!” Sho can't believe what he just heard. How can that be happening?

But with Aiba kept apologizing as if he's about to cry, Sho knows there's no point to blame him anymore.
“That's OK. Just come and help out here. I'll think of something.” That's all Sho can say, but he has no idea what he's going to do. A birthday party cannot be without a birthday cake.
Nino tried to call Jun, but the call goes right to voice mailbox. “May be there's no mobile signal.” Nino told the discouraging Sho.  Ah, what else can go wrong?
Giving a big sigh, Sho tried to think positive. “I'll go leave a note at Satoshi's apartment asking them to come here right after they come back. I'm gonna pick up a cake on the way then.”
“You go ahead. I can manage here. Aiba will be here soon too.” Nino knows things have not turned out smoothly for the party preparation so far and wants to give some support to Sho.
“Thanks Nino!”
It's already noon time. It won't be long until Jun and Ohno return from fishing. So Sho hurries off to Ohno's apartment. While walking there, he was thinking that so far what he had planned had totally gone off track. The supposed to be perfect surprise party has already set off with the wrong foot. He prayed hard that the rest of the day will be better. Before giving any surprise to Ohno, he has already gotten a lot of surprises himself.
He left a note at the front door of Ohno's apartment asking him and Jun to go to his place immediately upon coming back. He didn't give a reason on the note, just said It's important. He hopes Jun can guess what's going on and helps to convince Ohno to go. Then on the way back home he dropped by a bakery. He remembers Ohno likes to eat ice cream so he chooses to buy a chocolate flavored ice cream cake. He quickly goes back to his place and put the cake in the freezer before it melts. When he arrives back home, Aiba has already arrived. He is helping in making balloons and decorating the place.
“Sho-kun, I'm so sorry for messing up.” Aiba stops what he was doing and apologizes again when Sho walks in the door.
“Don't worry about it. See, I bought another cake already.” He shows the box of the ice cream cake as he walks towards the kitchen to put the cake in the freezer. Then he turns towards Nino who's standing by the stove. “How's the food coming?”
Nino turns to look at Sho and said with a smile, “I'm almost done. I only need to finish the pasta source.”
At least the food preparation didn't go wrong.
After they finished cooking, Sho looks at the clock and it's almost two. Ohno and Jun should be back anytime.
“Did you try calling Jun again?” Sho asked Nino.
“Yes, but still goes to voice mailbox.”
All they can do is wait, so they watch some DVD and play some cards to pass the time. Two hours had passed and still no sign of Jun and Ohno. They start to wonder what's keeping them when Sho's phone rings, but to their disappointment, it isn't either of them. It was from an unknown number, but he answers anyway.
“Is this Sakurai-san?” the voice from the other side of the phone asked.
“Yes, this is Sakurai. And you are – ”
“I am a staff at the Kawashima Boating Company. One of our boat that was rented by Jun Matsumoto-san this morning has problem with the engine. They are not able to come back to the pier yet. We don't have any available boat to go bring them back at the moment. But we will soon, then we will go immediately. Please be assured that they are safe and they have food and water and warm clothing on board. When the captain radio in to our office reporting the situation, Matsumoto-san told us to give you a call to let you know. There is no mobile signal so they can't call you directly.”
“Engine problem?! How long it's gonna take before you can bring them back?” Sho is worried about Jun and Ohno's safety.
“It should not be long. I'm hoping to contact a boat near their location to take a route there.” the other party said.
“Please keep me posted.” Sho requests before hanging up the phone and fills Nino and Aiba in with the news.
“I hope they can come home soon” Nino starts to feel sorry for Sho. Everything seems to have gone wrong today.
But what Aiba says made Sho feels even worse. “Ohno-kun probably wouldn't mind continue fishing though.”
By seven o'clock Sho knows that the party is pretty much canceled. As much as he is disappointed, he is now more worried about his lover and friend's safety. The boating company never calls back to let them know about picking up Ohno and Jun.
He knows Nino and Aiba must be hungry so he asks them to eat, but he doesn't have much of an appetite himeself. Just as they finish eating, Sho got a text message from Ohno.
Just got home. Tired. Call you tomorrow.  -- Satoshi
That's OK. Get some rest. Happy Birthday!   -- Sho

Sho sighed and returned the text. He is, however, relieved that both Ohno and Jun are home safe.
“Sorry guys, I guess the party won't happen after all. I wasted your day for nothing.” Sho apologizes to his friends.
“That's OK, Sho-kun. At least we know they're safe. We can always celebrate Ohno-kun's birthday again some other time.” Nino said before he left with Aiba. He doesn't want to upset his friend anymore than he already is.
Sho received a call from Jun later on, telling him what happened and that he's sorry he couldn't get Ohno to his apartment as instructed. Sho thanked him anyway and asked his friend to get some rest after the day long ordeal.
Looking at the decorated room and prepared food, Sho sits down on the chair feeling totally defeated. He gives a chuckle on the bad luck he have had all day long, but he actually wanted to cry.
I suppose there isn't anything more that can go wrong.
Then all of a sudden the whole room goes dark. Power outage!
Oh no! The ice cream cake in the freezer!
Sho can't believe his luck is as bad as that, but he doesn't care anymore. I'll just clean up the mess tomorrow.
He takes a shower in the dark and jumps on to bed covering his head with the blanket, feeling sad that he didn't even get to spend one minute with his lover on his birthday. The birthday card he designed and made himself could not be presented on this special day. Some surprise party I planned!

He is tired himself, so he falls asleep pretty soon. Not before long, he feels a pair of hands slowly wrapped around his waist and body warmth radiates into his back. A familiar scent could be smelled.
Before he could turn his body around, the arms around him held tighter to prevent him from moving. Then he felt a kiss laid on his nape.
“Shuush, don't move.” Ohno said gently. “I know about the party. Thank you.” He then lays another kiss on Sho, this time on his ear. “I have you, it's all that matters.”
Sho blushes from the sweet words of his lover. Covering the hands on his waist with his own, he opens his eyes and looks at the clock on his bedside. 11:55pm. He smiles.
I still get to be with Satoshi on his birthday.
In the end, it is Sho who gets the big surprise.

// The End

A/N: Happy Birthday to Riida Ohno! And wish 3D Kaibutsu-kun a big success!
