Pairing: Yama (Ohno x Sho)
Rating: PG
Genre: AU, fluff, romance, drama
Summary: Ohno tried to find out what's bothering the preoccupied Sho, while sorting out his own feelings.

Chapter 13

After Jun left, Ohno kept thinking what his cousin had said. He never thought he could have feelings for a guy. In a way, he was denying that it could possibly be true. He liked girls, had countless girlfriends even though never had a serious relationship. He also had numerous blind dates with girls arranged by his parents. He was straight in every way, from every angle. But….

Ohno could not look at Sho the same way since. He avoided to have eye contact with Sho when they were alone, and if they did, he felt his heart beats incredibly fast. When his parents were present and he pretended to make the intimate gestures with Sho, he found himself really enjoyed doing them and wanted more. It seemed the more he tried to evade his feelings, the stronger it’s growing inside him.

Sho did notice Ohno’s odd behavior around him, but had no intention in finding out the reason behind the change. He was a little preoccupied himself ever since his father came to see him that day, but his distant had Ohno mistakenly thinking that Sho had somehow noticed his special feelings and had scared him off.

“Satoshi, I probably won’t be able to keep up with my rent payment for now. But I promise I’ll make up for it later.” Sho said to Ohno one night when they were in their room.

Sho hadn’t initiated many conversations between them for days and Ohno was happy to hear that Sho was talking to him.

“Rent? What rent?” Ohno couldn’t understand what Sho was talking about at first, then he remembered Sho insisted on paying rent to him for staying in the villa. “Ah, don’t worry about it. I never asked you to pay anyway. Do you have money problem? If you do, I can – ”

“No!” Sho cut him off. “I am fine. I – just have to buy a few reference books which are quite expensive, so – but thanks for the offer.”

Ohno wanted to continue the conversation but didn’t know how. Sho had been persistant and prompt in making the rent payments. Ohno didn’t care about the money, but he wanted to know what was behind Sho’s change in behavior and now monetary issue. It seemed to be something more than avoiding Ohno’s feelings.

Just as Ohno was still thinking about how to carry on the conversation, he heard Sho’s phone rang. He glanced at Sho, who was looking at his phone, but seemed to be reluctant in answering.

“Yes.” Sho eventually answered the phone, but greeted the other party in a dejected tone.

“I told you, I don’t have anymore. No, that’s the truth, please -- ” Sho sounded frustrated and walked towards the balcony and closed the door, clearly didn’t want Ohno to hear the conversation.

The phone call only lasted a few minutes, but when Sho came back into the room, he was clearly upset.

“Sho, are you OK? You seemed pretty uptight lately, even when you’re with mama. Is something bothering you?” Ohno asked cautiously. He could sense Sho was definitely not himself lately. If it was just avoiding him, he wouldn’t be so absent even when only Ohno’s mother was around.

“Nothing is bothering me. I’m just tired from school and work. That’s all.” Sho was not saying much.

Though Sho denied it, Ohno was skeptical. “Is that it? Just quit your work and focus on school then. You can live here as long as you want, even after my parents leave. I can lend you money for books and – ”

“I said I’m fine. Is that so hard to understand? Just leave me alone.” Sho said in frustration and stormed out of the room.

Ohno was shocked by the outburst of the usually cool and calm guy. He had never seen Sho so mad before, and all he did was trying to help.

“Fine! Whatever! Why do I care anyway?!” Ohno yelled at the slammed door. He has always been the pampered one by families and friends all his life. He’s not used to someone talking to him in such a harsh tone other than his father, and certainly not from a peer.

He failed terribly trying to keep Sho and their argument out of his mind all evening. He was pissed on how Sho treated him, but he was also worried about him. Something was definitely not right and he’s annoyed on how Sho had shut him out.

It’s almost 1:00am. Ohno kept tossing and turning on the sofa but couldn’t fall asleep. Sho was still not back.

Why should I sleep on the sofa when you’re not even here. I shall reclaim my comfortable bed!

Ohno threw himself on the bed and closed his eyes. But Sho’s scent on the bed and blanket didn’t help him falling asleep any easier. On the contrary, it reminded him of the man even more.

The bedside clock showed the digits ‘2’ ‘0’ ‘0’. Ohno’s eyes were still wide opened. He couldn’t stand it anymore. He had to do something. He got up and changed, got his car key and headed out.

When Sho’s car came to sight near the boathouse, Ohno felt a sense of relief. He parked his car next to Sho’s and just sat there. There was a dim light inside the boathouse indicating that Sho might still be awake. He hesitated for a while and decided to go in. Worse came to worst, he would just check on Sho and leave if the troubled man really didn't want any company.

The path leading to the boathouse was narrow and full of weeds. The boathouse itself was old and worn out. It has clearly been deserted for a long time. Nevertheless, this forgotten place was actually the safe zone of a young man who supposed to have the whole world ahead of him. At that moment, Ohno realized how lonely Sho’s heart must be.

Ohno cautiously opened the door and walked inside. Not long after he came to the room where the dim light was, he saw a small figure sitting on the floor at the corner of the room. Sho was holding his legs up on his chest and his head resting on his knees. When he heard Ohno’s footsteps, he looked up and was stunned to see the older man.

“What are you doing here? How did you -- ” Sho asked after he came back from the moment of shock.

Ohno wasn’t going to admit that he’s worried about the man and wanted to check on him. “Is this place yours?”

“Excuse me?” Sho was confused about what Ohno was asking.

Ohno looked around the room and asked again, “Is this boathouse yours?”

“Well – no ” No knowing the reason behind Ohno’s question, Sho could only answer the only way he could.

“Then if you can be here, I can too.” Ohno said calmly while sitting down at the opposite corner of the empty room, where he can see Sho clearly.

“Suit yourself then. ” Sho had no argument for what Ohno said and just ignored him.

Both of them sat there without saying a word. Ohno stole glances at Sho once in a while. Sho still held his legs closed to his knees. His head leaned back against the wall and stared at the ceiling. The younger man seemed to have a lot on his mind.

Neither of them paid attention to how much time had passed since they sat there. All they could hear was their breathing sounds. Sho was used to this kind of silence, as he came here a lot over the years, alone. At times he wanted to be alone, but he hated to be alone.

This time, having Ohno there, sitting with him, breathing with him, somehow felt different. Ohno didn’t say a word more, nor did he move any closer. Just his being there made Sho felt not so much alone anymore. It doesn’t solve any of his problems, but he’s starting to like this feeling.

The light of dawn began to invade into the room. Sho opened his eyes realizing that he actually had fallen asleep. He almost never did that when he spent the night in the boathouse. Something was definitely different this time.

He looked across the room and found Ohno lying on the floor in a fetal position, still very much asleep. He was somewhat grateful that the rich man had kept him company the later part of the night. May be that’s what made him relaxed enough to fall asleep. He took off his jacket and put it on Ohno gently, not wanting to wake the man, before he left to get ready for early morning class.

“What’s up with you today, Ohno-san?” Nino asked his rich friend. “You looked like you had been up all night.”

“Didn’t get much sleep last night.” Ohno kept massaging his neck and back muscles.

“Partying all night?” Nino teased. “I thought you retreated from excessive night life while your parents are till around.”

“Oh shut up!” Ohno was too embarrassed to reveal where he was and what he did the night before. He woke up later after Sho was gone with aches and pain all over his body from sleeping on the hard floor. He was surprised to see Sho’s jacket on him but it was certainly a pleasant one for him.

“Nino, did Sho mention to you that he’s in any kind of money problem?” Ohno suddenly asked, hoping to get some insight on what’s bothering Sho.

“No. Why? Sho has money problem?” Nino seemed shocked to hear that. “You know he never asked for help. Ridiculous pride of his.”

“I’m just guessing. He had been working double shifts on his job and – something is definitely troubling him.”

Nino could feel that Ohno cared about Sho, which he thought was a good thing. “May be you can talk to him. He might open up to you more.”

“What makes you think that?” Ohno was puzzled. “He hardly knew me.”

“Exactly! Sometimes it’s easier to talk to strangers and wouldn’t worry about being judged. I know too much about him. He won’t feel comfortable talking any more of his problems to me.”

Strange theory, Ohno thought, but could very well be true. He wanted to have a conversation with Sho anyway, hoping that it might help him sorting out his own feelings for the man at the same time.

Ohno didn’t see Sho again until late that night. Sho didn’t come home for dinner. Ohno lied on the bed waiting for Sho to come home, hoping to find a chance to talk with him.

“Hey” Ohno greeted the younger man when he walked through the bedroom door. “Working late?”

“Um, ya” Sho’s reply was simple, trying to avoid eye contact with Ohno.

Ohno quickly got off the bed. “I didn’t want mama to be suspicious if she walks in. Here, you can have the bed back.”

“That’s alright. It’s your bed anyway. I can take the sofa tonight.” Sho got his pajamas and went into the bathroom.

Ohno felt rather awkward. He got the blanket and lied down on the sofa, still wondering how he would start the conversation with Sho. Sho came out from the bathroom and noticed the bed was empty. He got on the bed and wanted to sleep, but a question kept floating in his head.

“Why did you go there last night?” Sho finally gathered enough courage to ask. He spoke very softly. Part of him wished that Ohno was asleep and didn’t hear him, but part of him really wanted to know.

“Umm, I couldn’t hear you very well and I don’t want to yell. How about I – may be – come closer – to talk?” Ohno used to be so bold when it came to making moves on girls. Now all of a sudden he was all bashful when facing a guy.

“OK, I guess – ” Sho was a little hesitant, but still agreed.

Ohno was delighted. He got up and swiftly went to the bed and jumped on the empty side.

“You – ” Sho was somewhat stunned by Ohno’s movement. “You only said come closer – not – on the bed.”

Ohno grinned, ignoring Sho’s protest. “Now, we can hear each other very well.”

Sho signed. Sometimes he didn’t know how to handle the bratty Ohno. “Now, can you tell me why you went to the boathouse last night?”

Poor Sho. His life is complicated enough and then his father comes in again.
Ohno's 'sudden' realization of his 'confusion' about how he seems to be acting towards Sho and his orientation lolz
I really want to see how their relationship will develop with all the complications that will arise even more with the whole situation that Sho is in.
