Genre: AU, angst, drama
Summary: Sho was going through a tough night, and Ohno went far and beyond to give his lover comfort and support.

The pain of having a beloved one dying or died is unbearable and nobody wants to ever experience that. Unfortunately that’s something that almost everyone has to face sometime in our lives.

“Satoshi, I’m scared” Sho said holding the hand of his lover Ohno. “What if – ”

“He’ll be OK, I know he will.” Ohno didn’t let Sho finished, giving Sho’s hand a gentle squeeze. “Your father is a strong man. He’ll pull through.”

“I hope so, but open heart surgery is very risky, and he’s pretty weak.”

“You’ve got to have faith.” Ohno tried to make Sho thought positive.

Sho nods. “Will you be in the hospital with me tonight? I know you have to work, but I really need you with me.”

“Of course I will. He is also like a father to me too. I’m so grateful that he accepts me and trusts his precious son to me. I’ll be in the hospital as soon as I can.” Ohno gave his lover a gentle hug. “No matter what happened, I’ll be there.”

Sho nodded on Ohno’s shoulder. “I love you, Satoshi.”

Ohno placed a soft kiss on Sho’s ear before whispering to it. “I love you too, Sho.”

“Sakurai-san, we are getting ready to take your father to the operating room. It will be a long night. Will someone be coming to keep you company?”

“Yes, thank you. My partner will be coming shortly.” Sho said to the nurse after taking a glance at his watch.

“Good. It’s not a night to be alone. The waiting room has a couch, you can lie down to rest if you need to. There’s a coffee vending machine, but we have better ones in the nurse station, and you are welcomed to drink it. Don’t worry too much. You need to stay strong for him.” The nurse said to Sho with a smile before she headed back to the operating room.

Sho appreciated the nurse trying to make him relaxed and stayed positive. He needed that. Ever since his mother died when he was ten, his father had been his only family, until he met Ohno.

Sho looked at the time again, it’s past ten o’clock. Although he knew Ohno had to work late that night, but still hoped that his lover would be there by now. Ohno has always been the best remedy for Sho’s anxieties. Feeling drained, both emotionally and physically, Sho walked over to the the couch in the waiting room, sat down and closed his eyes to rest.

A little earlier, at the office, Ohno was trying to wrap up his work so he could go to the hospital. He wanted to be by the side of his lover, giving him his much needed support. He loved Sho’s father too. The guy gave him fatherly love that he lacked after losing his own parents at young age. He knew how devastated Sho was since his father got sick and wouldn’t let him to go through the night alone.

It was almost an hour drive from his office to the hospital, and he was already leaving the office later than he had planned. Ohno was getting anxious.

Oh no, the operation had begun. I had to get there fast.

Thinking about how worried and apprehensive Sho must be, alone in the waiting room. But the traffic in a rainy night was not doing him any favor. For once, Ohno wished he could fly. Minutes had passed but he hadn’t moved more than a few meters on the road. Getting impatient, he took an illegal U-turn in the middle of the road and headed back the direction where he came from.

I knew a short cut around this traffic mess…

“Hey -- ”

Sho felt a soft pat on his shoulder and he opened his eyes. He’s still not used to the light in the room after closing his eyes. All he could see was a silhouette, but the one he was all too familiar with. “Hey – you’re here.” Sho stretched his arms but his eyes never left the person standing besides him.

“Sorry I’m late, I – ” Ohno tried to explain but was stopped by Sho’s fingers pressing against his lips, followed by a tight embrace.

“You’re here now, it’s all that matters. I felt so alone without you.” Sho buried his head in Ohno’s shoulders. He felt a slight relief now that his lover was there with him.

Ohno returned the embrace, even tightened it a bit. He closed his eyes without saying anything, but a glimpse of sadness and despair flashed across his face. After a while he gently pulled Sho away, just enough so that they can see each other, but their faces barely apart.

“I promised you I’ll be here with you tonight no matter what. You won’t be alone.” Ohno reassured the worried man. “How’s the operation going?”

Sho shook his head weakly. “No news yet. They had gone in for – ” He took a look at the clock on the wall, which just stroke twelve. “ – two hours already.”

“This kind of surgery will take hours. At this point no news is good news.” Ohno led Sho to sit down on the couch. “Just sit down and relax a little.”

Sho leaned his body against Ohno, who wrapped his arms around him and gently fondling his arm. Ohno could feel the restlessness and stress of the man in his arms.

“Do you remember the first time you brought me to meet your papa?” Ohno wanted to distract Sho from thinking about the operation too much.

“Of course, how could I forget? You were so nervous.” Sho chuckled.

“How could I not be? I was going to ask him for permission to date his precious son. If he didn’t like me, then I’m doomed.” He laid gentle kisses on Sho’s hair, inhaling the unique scent of it that he loves so much.

“He gave you permission, didn’t he?” Sho giggled. He felt more at ease with his lover by his side.

“Not after three hours of speeches and telling me pretty much his life story and how important you are to him. I was sweating all those time and didn’t even dare to blink.” Ohno recalled the night two years ago. “But I would do the same if someone wants to date my gorgeous son.”

“I’m the only family he has, and same for me until I met you. You two are the most important person in my life. I don’t know what I’d do if I lose either of you.” Sho gave Ohno’s hand a squeeze.

Ohno went silent for a while, before saying in a solemn tone. “Your papa will be fine. And, Sho, you are much stronger than you think you are. You don’t need to depend on me.”

“I like to depend on you. I feel so safe when I’m with you.” Sho said with a smile.

“You will be fine, with or without me. I know you will.”

Ohno seemed to have a lot on his mind, but at the moment he’s focusing on comforting his lover. “I know you’re exhausted, and I don’t think we’ll hear anything from the doctor anytime soon. Why don’t you close your eyes and get some sleep?”

Sho was truly exhausted. He hadn’t had much rest lately, especially the last couple of days when his father was preparing for the operation. Even though still worried sick, he knew there’s not much he could do at the moment. And Ohno’s strong arms made him at ease.

“OK, wake me up if there’s any news.” Sho shifted his body into a more comfortable position and closed his eyes, feeling the comfort of Ohno’s embrace. “Satoshi, thank you for being here.”

“Sho – ”

“I love you – ”

“I love you too – ”

“Remember that no matter what happened, no matter where I am, I will always be with you – ”

“I know – ”

Sho barely murmured those words before drifting off. At least at the moment, his mind was peaceful.

“Sakurai-san, Sakurai-san – ”

Sho was again awaken by someone. It wan’t Ohno, but he couldn’t recognize the voice. He didn’t want to wake up. He was having the sweetest dream he ever had. He and Ohno and his father all went out to sea together. The two lovers were on the deck fishing while his father was reading. Sho felt a big force was pulling his fishing rod and Ohno was helping him pulling up the line. When they were about to see what was caught, someone called out his name and he was awaken.

Oh, it was a dream.

Sho’s attention was quickly brought back to the person who woke him up. It was the nurse.

Papa, papa’s operation!

“What time is it? Has the operation finished? How is he? Is he alright?” Sho asked anxiously. He couldn’t even tell how much time had passed since he slept. He just thought if the nurse came to wake up, there must be some updates.

“Calm down, Sakurai-san. It’s seven o’clock in the morning. The operation is done and was very successful. Your father is in the recovery room. He is doing fine. Don’t worry.”

Sho was so relieved. His eyes blurred with happy tears. “When can I see him?”

“He still needs close monitoring during recovery, and he won’t be awake for at least an hour. I will let you know when we brought him back to his own room.”

“Thank you.” Sho felt he could finally breathe. He didn’t know how he could get through the night without Ohno. He looked around but couldn’t find his lover. Satoshi?

“Have you seen my partner anywhere?” Sho asked the nurse. “The person who was with me last night. Have you seen him?”

The nurse looked puzzled. “I didn’t see anyone with you last night.”

“No, he came in at around midnight. He was lying with me on the couch when I fell asleep.” Sho tried to explain.

“You were alone all night, Sakurai-san. I passed by the waiting room several times. I saw you sleeping on the couch but you were all alone. There was no one with you.” The nurse told Sho with a confused look before leaving the room.

I was alone? That’s impossible. Satoshi was with me the whole night. Where did he go?

While Sho was still puzzling about what the nurse said, a man dressed in police uniform came into the room and stood right in front of Sho.

“Are you Sho Sakurai?” The policeman asked.

“Yes?” Sho answered, didn’t understand what was that about and how the policeman knew him.

The policeman handed a wallet to Sho. “I’m sorry, Sakurai-san. There has been a car accident last night.”

Sho listened to what the policeman said and looked at the wallet. His hand started to shake. He recognized it, it was Ohno’s!

“It was raining and the ditch was deep, so it wasn’t discovered until this morning. But it was too late.” The policeman continued.

“It’s impossible. There must be some kind of mistake. Satoshi was with me all night.” Sho couldn’t want to believe it. He didn’t want to believe it. He was sure that he’s with Ohno the whole night.

“I’m so sorry, but it was no mistake. The body in the car matches the picture in the driver’s license. It was Satoshi Ohno. You were his emergency contact, so we traced you here to notify you.”

Sho lost every bit of strength in his body. He dropped to the floor holding the wallet closed to him, eyes blurred again, but this time in devastation. “Satoshi – ”

Remember that no matter what happened, no matter where I am, I will always be with you –

// The End

While it makes it comforting to know that Sho's father pulled through, it's quite sad that he lost Ohno.
That Ohno did everything to still be there for Sho; even if not physically.
Somehow bittersweet, but interesting.
Thanks a lot for sharing~

I figured that Ohno had gotten in an accident and wasn't physically there with Sho; things kinda had that feel to it.
Poor Sho, he was so worried about his father, that losing Ohno must be devastating.

Thanks for sharing~
