Chapter 15

The light in the alley was getting dimmer as the sun was getting ready to call in a day, but the coming of nightfall didn't seem to disturb the two people in the alley, still in each others embrace.

Sho had stopped sobbing, but he did not want to let go. For the first time in a very long time he felt wanted, loved and safe. He indulged himself to be totally submerged into these feelings. A crying shoulder had been lacking all these years and he clenched onto Ohno like a life jacket, until he finally came to his senses and pulled away.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have – ”

“Sho, what’s the matter? I can help you. Let me help you.” Ohno was taken a back by Sho’s sudden withdrawal.

“You can’t help me. You don’t know anything about me.” Sho glanced at Ohno but quickly tuned away, didn’t dare to have eye contact with the man.

“Then tell me, help me know more about you. I told you I like you and I really do. I am not kidding.” Ohno attempted to move closer to Sho but the other man stepped back, keeping their distance.

“I’m not worth it. Just -- leave me alone.” Sho turned around and ran off.

“Sho – Sho – ”

But Sho never looked back. He didn’t know how to face Ohno. Everything that happened these past two days had made him bewildered. Ohno’s spending the night with him in the boathouse, then out of the blue confessing to him that he liked him, with Ohno intruding into his confrontation with his father adding to the intricacy. His family situation was not something he's proud of and had tried the best he could to keep it to himself. He needed time to think, to sort out how he felt and what he should do next.

Ohno felt dejected after Sho ran off from the alley. Now that he had told Sho about his feelings for him, he had hoped that they would get closer. He wandered around the alley like a lost puppy, couldn't understand why Sho would run off like that. He wanted to help Sho, after knowing what had been troubling the man lately. How, he didn't know, but he knew he wanted to. If all Sho's father wanted was money, it shouldn't be a big problem, Ohno thought. After all, that's something that he had.

Ohno waited up for Sho at home that night. He knew Sho must have gone to the boathouse again. He wanted to go find him, but he hesitated. He was a bit angry at the man, and at himself as well. Of all people why did he pick Sho to like, he kept asking himself. All the girls around him were dying to get his glances, but he never had the same feelings for them as what he felt for Sho. The urge to see him, be around him and get close to him. The ache he felt inside when he saw Sho's sad face. The electricity he felt running through his body when he kissed Sho. All these were undeniable.

Tossing and turning on the bed didn't make him feeling any better. He's too arrogant to admit he had been rejected, but he would not accept defeat either, not after he finally realized what Sho meant to him. But what could he do to make Sho opened his door?

Meanwhile at the boathouse, Sho had his own struggle. First there was his father, kept coming to him like a money sucking machine. He didn't know how he found out about him living with the Ohno's, which he knew would be a big headache. His father had warned that he would pay the Ohno's a visit himself if his son was too stingy, as he put it, to provide for his old man. Sho had barely managed to keep his father from doing so but then Ohno showed up and actually gave his father money, something he had feared would happen. It was like digging himself into a bottomless hole.

Then there was Ohno's confession. Being surprised would be an understatement in hearing Ohno said he liked him. Ohno was straight for all he knew. He wouldn't have feelings for guys. Besides, they were together only because of an agreement. They were pretending to be lovers and there should never be any real involvement between them. Although Sho had noticed his feelings for his supposed lover had changed over the few months they were together and he was getting to like the man. A small part in him had even hoped that they could be more than just friends after the confession. But after the incident with his father, that slim chance of that happening had dissipated. Why would a rich carefree guy like Ohno want to get involved with a troubled guy from a broken family like him? And Ohno hadn’t even known everything about him. Even if the older man didn’t mind, he would not let his own problem clung on Ohno. The best way to do this is for him to keep his distance.

“Mama, can I ask you something?” After being awake all night waiting for Sho, Ohno still couldn’t come up with any good ideas. He saw his mother at breakfast in the morning and decided to seek help. Sho was close to his mother, may be she could give him some advice.

“Sure, dear. You can ask me anything.” Ohno’s mother was delighted. Her son rarely came to her voluntarily for anything. The recent chumminess was certainly a pleasant surprise to her.

Ohno sat down at the dining table, facing his mother. His hands cupping his coffee mug, with his thumb tracing the rim of the mug aimlessly. He didn’t know where to begin.

His mother saw his son’s misgiving, and felt that she should probably initiate the conversation. “Is that something about Sho? I haven’t seen him much lately. Did you two have a fight again?”

Ohno looked up at his mother, a little surprised in how his mother could read his mind. He never noticed that his mother actually knew him quite well.

“Um, yes, sort of.” He didn’t know if that considered a fight or not.

“Mama, Sho has some – problems, I want to help him but he won’t let me.”

“Oh, what kind of problems?” Ohno’s mother asked with concern.

Ohno hesitated for a moment. The unwillingness of Sho in talking about his family made him suspected that the younger man did not want his situation to be known. Up till then Sho still didn’t know that Nino had told him all about his family and childhood. Ohno didn’t think he was in the position to reveal it to his mother behind Sho’s back.

“I rather not say, Mama. I don’t know if Sho would mind – ”

“That’s OK, son. I understand. Do you know why he won’t let you help him?” Ohno’s mother was not mad that her son kept his lover’s secret. On the contrary, she was pleased.

“I don’t know, that’s the problem. I told him I want to help, but he refused. But I know for sure he’s bothered by it. I don’t know what to do.”

Ohno’s mother could feel the frustrations in her son, but she’s glad. It was the first time she saw her son being considerate for other people’s feelings and really care about someone, to the point that he felt helpless and agitated. Her son has really grown up.

She put her hands on her son’s and said with a gentle voice. “Satoshi, I know how you feel. Sometimes we don’t want our own problems to trouble others, even the ones we love. May be it’s due to pride, may be it’s because we want to protect our loved ones. It happened even to your papa and me.”

“Then what should I do? I hate seeing him torturing himself like this.”

“Be there for him. Show him how much you care. Let him know he can count on you when he needs you. He will come to you when he’s ready.” Ohno’s mother said with a smile.

“Thank you, Mama.” Ohno felt his mother’s smile quite comforting, and that’s what he needed. His mother was not that difficult to talk to after all.

“Anytime, my dear. I’m glad you come to me. Sho will come around. Don’t worry.”

After talking with his mother, Ohno decided to go and find Sho to talk to him. He promised himself he wouldn’t pressure him, but just tell him how much he cared.

Knowing that Sho would not miss any class for the world, he knew the best way to find Sho was to wait for him after class. He waited outside Sho’s classroom, trying to think of the best way to talk to the man. For some reason he suddenly felt nervous. It’s like one wrong word and he would scare Sho away.

When he saw Sho coming out of the classroom, he didn’t approach him right away. There were too many people and Sho could easily get away if the man wanted to avoid him. It was not a good place to talk anyway. He silently followed Sho, keeping a safe distance, until Sho was on a small path at the back of the building before calling him.

“Sho – ”

Sho turned around and saw Ohno. His first reflex was a smile but then everything kept flowing back to his mind and immediately withdrew. He couldn’t face Ohno. Seeing him made his pain so real, made him felt unworthy of being in his presence. He didn’t say anything and continued walking away.

“Sho – stopped!” Ohno called out away while kept walking towards Sho in about the same pace.

“Just leave me alone.” Sho said without stopping or facing Ohno.

“Can we just talk?” Ohno started to walk faster to catch up with Sho.

Sho didn’t answer or stop. He started walking faster as well to keep Ohno from getting any closer.

“We still have an agreement. You can avoid me forever!” Ohno yelled but immediately regret. The last thing he wanted was for Sho to think that their relationship was only a business one. He wanted so much more with Sho now. But it was the only thing he could think of at that moment to make Sho stopped, and it worked.

Sho stopped walking and Ohno stopped too, about a meter behind Sho. Both men stood there motionless and wordless for about a minute before Sho slowly turned around.

Sho’s expression, or lack of one, gave Ohno a chill.

“You are right. I am hired by you and I can’t break our agreement. I don’t have money to give you back.” Sho said plainly, still trying to avoid looking at Ohno.

“I’m sorry, Sho. I didn’t mean it that way.” Ohno tried to explain himself. “I just want to talk to you.”

“Then talk now.”

“This is not a good place. Can we go home?”

“I have to work.”

“Just skip work for one night, will you? I don’t think either of us can focus on anything if we don’t straighten things out between us.”

“I can’t skip work. I can’t lose my job.”

“But you are not doing your job as my lover. You were hardly home and my parents are getting suspicious.” Liar, liar, pants on fire. Ohno hated himself for pushing. What about his promise to himself of not pressuring Sho?

“Fine. I’ll go home with you.” Sho sighed. He took out his phone and made a quick call. “OK, let’s go.”

Back at home, the two quickly retreated back to their bedroom. When they passed by the kitchen, Ohno’s mother and her son made brief eye contact, but neither made any greeting to each other. They seemed to have mutual understanding that it was not a good time to say anything. Ohno vaguely saw a nod from his mother before she disappeared from the corner of his eye.

Once in their bedroom, Sho sat down at the couch but said nothing. Ohno didn’t know how to break the awkwardness between them but decided to start with an apology.

“I’m sorry, Sho, for what I said earlier about our agreement. I didn’t mean it. I only said it to make you stopped running away.”

“You don’t need to apologize. You were just telling the truth.” Sho’s voice still didn’t show any emotion.

Ohno sat down next to Sho, as close as he could until Sho’s right side was against the side of the couch. He looked at the younger man and said “Sho, about your father – ”

“I don’t want to talk about him.” Sho cut him off. “I’m sorry about yesterday. You should not see what you saw. I’ll make sure he doesn’t bother you again.”

“I really want to help – ”

“I don’t need your help.” Sho cut him off again. “I can handle it myself.” Sho wanted to get up but Ohno grabbed his hand and pulled him again.

“Will you stop interrupting and just listen?!” The older man yelled, which made the younger man gasped and stopped talking.

Ohno turned to face Sho, took both of Sho’s hands into his, and said earnestly. “Sho, I like you. I’m serious. I want us to be more than friends. I may be uncertain with myself before, but now I’m more sure than ever.”

Sho was taken off guard by Ohno’s solemnness. He never thought it could come from the rich brat. He couldn’t deny the joyous feelings he had from Ohno’s words.

“I know you are going through some hard times with your father. But you don’t need to go through that alone. I want to help you. Let me help you.”

Despite being happy to hear Ohno’s sincere offer, Sho shook his head.

“It’s not your problem. I can’t drag you into this. Besides, you don’t know anything about me. It’s more complicated than you think.”

“I know more than you think I do. Nino told me.” Ohno revealed reluctantly.

“What?!” Sho stood up and looked at Ohno in shock.

“Please don’t blame him.” Ohno felt a little guilty. “I made him told me. I knew about your mother, and your father’s gambling addiction.”

Sho sat back down at the couch, losing his strength like a leaking balloon. Everything he had been ashamed of and tried so hard to hide was revealed. He covered his face with both hands, feeling so naked and exposed.

Ohno put his hands on Sho’s shoulder and patted it gently. “It’s ok, Sho. Everything will be ok.”

Sho still shook his head, more vigorously this time. “It’s not ok. It’s not ok.”

“I am here. I am here for you. We can deal with him together.” Ohno tried to comfort the agitated man.

Sho turned and looked at Ohno, his face wet with tear trails. “Why would you even want to be with me? I’m so messed up.”

“No, you are not messed up. Your family might be messed up, but certainly not you. You are the most courageous and diligent person I’ve ever known. I felt so worthless compared to you.” Ohno took Sho into an embrace and kissed his hair gently. Sho softened and leaned his body against the other warm body.

“If all your father wants is money, and if the amount is not large, may be – ” Ohno suggested.

“No! You can’t give him money again. He will never stop and will just eat you up more and more. And don’t trust anything he said. He – he is also a con artist.” The last sentence was as soft as a whisper. Sho felt another piece of him being torn apart by revealing yet another shameful fact about his family.

“Con artist?” Ohno wanted to hide his surprise but couldn’t. He knew his big reaction would hurt Sho more.

Sho let out a big sigh before nodding his head on Ohno’s shoulder. “He’s the reason why I lost my scholarship.”

“You lost your scholarship because of him? But how?”

Sho’s body shivered and Ohno felt it. He held the younger man tighter before Sho started to explain.

I am so glad that Sho is finally opening up to Ohno! He's been carrying the weight of his family problems for so long, he needs that shoulder to rest on. And Ohno has developed so much over the course of the story. ♥ Great chapter!
