Chapter 18

Sitting on a bench outside the library building, Sho was waiting for Ohno to get out of class and chauffeured him to work. He’s supposed to be studying but his thoughts were far away from the book that he had opened.

He thought about his family, or the family that he had long time ago, when his parents and him lived happily together. They were never rich, but their lives were simple and peaceful. His father used to bring him to soccer games and amusement parks. His mother would help him did his homework and sewed his costume for school plays. He life was perfect, until…

Sometimes Sho wondered where his mother was, if she would miss him, if she had ever wanted to come back to see him. He wondered if she was still alive, because it hurt more if she’s alive but totally abandoned him than if she was actually dead. But he hated himself for thinking like that.

And there was his father, a person whom he saw as his role model but ended up destroying his happy childhood and their perfect family. He never understood how a deck of cards and some dices could be more valuable than a wife and a son. After the stun the old man pulled that costed him his scholarship, he had given up any hope for his father to change. He was just thankful that his father had not come asking him for money again.

Oh yeah, he hadn’t come for money for awhile. May be he got lucky and had been winning. Just hope he stayed that way.

“Hey – ”

Sho’s thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice. He looked up and saw his childhood friend walking up to him. “Hey.”

“Waiting for Ohno-kun?” Nino sat down beside his old friend.

Sho blushed slightly. “Y – yes, his class should end soon.”

Nino was well aware of Sho and Ohno’s relationship. When he introduced Sho to Ohno, he didn’t think the two would really end up together. They were so different, coming from two totally different world, but yet they found their way to each other. He had also noticed how each other them had inspired the other, and both seemed happier than before. He was happy for them.

“I never thought you would really fall for Ohno-kun, you know.” Nino said. “In fact I was afraid you couldn’t stand him for more than a day. If I knew this arrangement was more than just a dinner, I never would have asked you. He could be such a brat sometimes.”

“He was, wasn’t he?” Sho chuckled. His affectionate tone said it all.

“Remember we used to spend hours in the park finding different types of insects?” Nino looked at the lady bug that happened to land on his shoe.

“Of course I do, we were having so much fun that we missed dinner hours and we both got scolded by our parents.” Sho recalled. “It was so much fun.”

Those were indeed the happiest days of his childhood. Life was simple, but comforting. The word ‘sadness’ was not even in his dictionary back then.

“We were best friends, weren’t we?” Nino opened a pack of peanuts and popped some into his mouth.

“We certainly were. I thought we would grow up together. We even talked about living next to each other when we have our own family and – ”

Nino poured a handful of peanuts into his palm and threw them at Sho.

Sho didn’t expect such action from his friend and didn’t react in time. His face was hit by a few of the peanuts. “Hey, what’s that for?”

“That’s for not treating me as your best friend even though you claimed I was.” Nino proclaimed.

“What?” Sho was all confused. “What are you talking about?”

“If you treated me as your best friend, why didn’t you come to me when needed a friend? All those years after your mother left, and after your grandmother died. I didn’t know what happened to you. I thought about you all the time, but apparently you didn’t think about me. Even if I can’t help much, the least I can do is to be there for you. You could talk to me, rather than taking everything on yourself. What did happen to you all those years anyway? How did you get by on your own?”

Sho went silence. He didn’t know what to say. What Nino said was partially true. He did think about his friend at difficult times, but he was avoiding him as well. He was too ashamed, ashamed what his family had become. He just wanted to hide in some place that no one would know him. Gradually he had built a wall around himself that he wouldn’t let anyone in, until Ohno broke it.

“I’m sorry Nino. I was just – It’s not something I could talk about casually -- ”

“Just promise me that you’ll not shut me out again. Come to me if you have any problem, or just want a friend to talk to, OK?” Nino said solemnly.

“Thank you, Nino. I promise.” Sho leaned over and gave his friend a hug and Nino hugged back.

“Hey, hey, hey. What are you doing to my boyfriend?” Ohno came to find Sho after class, just in time to see the two friends hugging each other. “You don’t think I’ll mind?” He pretended to be mad and gave Nino a gentle push.

Nino immediately released his arms that were around Sho and held them up. “Sorry dude. I didn’t know your boyfriend is off limit.”

“Don’t listen to him. We can hug all we want. Our history goes way back, before we even knew him, didn’t we.” Sho intentionally went to hug Nino again, this time a tighter one.

“But Nino is not your boyfriend! I am -- ” Ohno was getting a little jealous and tried to pull them apart.

“OK, OK, spare me on this, will you?” Nino pulled himself away from Sho’s embrace. “I don’t have any intention to come between you two love birds. Please don’t use me to play your little jealousy game. Geez – ”

Sho looked at Ohno and laughed. Though the one man in his life who should be supporting him and protecting him didn’t live up to his role, the two men that stood in front of him gave him feelings of comfort and love. Fate didn’t treat him too badly after all.

Saturday nights used to be party nights for Ohno. But ever since Sho came into his life he had slowly withdrawn from the partying gang. Sho didn’t have to work on Saturday nights, so these nights were time that they spent together, either going on dates or just enjoying some quiet time at home.

This Saturday night they were staying at home since Sho had a research paper to work on. After dinner, Ohno quickly took Sho back to their bedroom.

“What’s the hurry of coming back to the bedroom?” Sho asked Ohno after they entered their bedroom. “You should spend more time with your parents, or else they will think that I’ve stolen their son from them.”

“You already have.” Ohno went up to wrap his arms around Sho's waist from the back and kissed his cheek.

"Non-sense." Sho side-eyed Ohno and broke loose from the embrace. "I have papers to do. Don't disturb me." He then went on to sit down at the desk and started working.

"Fine. I'm here if you need a break." He lied down on the bed and put on his headphone.

Ohno retreated back to the bedroom quickly because he didn’t want to have any time alone with his father, afraid that his father would bring up the subject about him spending too much money again. He had just made another ATM withdrawal earlier that day.

He lost count of how much money he had given Sho’s father. Many times he tried to tell Sho about it, but the longer he waited, the harder it was for him to reveal this. Guilty conscience had prevented him from facing his father, or even Sho. He’s beginning to feel that he’s being forced into a corner.

A few hours later Ohno started to feel thirsty. So he got up and headed out to the kitchen. "Sho, do you want anything to drink? I'm getting some water."

Sho didn't answer. He just shook his head without even turning to look at Ohno. His attention never left his paper. When he concentrated on his work, he's really focused.

Ohno went the the kitchen and got himself a glass of water. When he's heading back to his bedroom, he passed by his parent's room and heard noises in there. He's surprised they weren't asleep yet. He stopped in front of the door. Their talking inside was loud enough for him to hear, even behind closed doors. His parents seemed to be arguing about something.

"Give him a break, will you?" Ohno's mother said to her husband. "I don't believe it."

"Look at these. I'm not judging him out of nothing." His father argued.

After a moment of silence, his mother finally spoke. "Don't jump to conclusion so fast. There might be more than we don't know about. Just talk to him, but be calm and objective, OK?"

"You bet I will. I'm going to have a good talk with him."

Ohno listened no more. He quietly walked back to his bedroom as fast as he could. He's sure that his parents were talking about his recent frequent ATM withdrawals. He didn't want to be drag inside and be lectured, as he hadn't find a good excuse for his actions yet.

"What's wrong, Satoshi?" Sho's focus was interrupted by the sound of Ohno slamming the door behind him after he returned.

"No -- nothing. The door knob just slipped out of my hand." What a dumb thing to say! He went up and put his forehead on Sho's shoulder and rubbed gently. "Are you coming to bed yet? It's late."

"My paper is not even half done. I don't have much time -- " But a kiss from his boyfriend prevented him from finishing his sentence.

"You can continue tomorrow. I'm off for a sketching excursion all day, so you can work all you want without interruption. But now, can I steal you away from your boring paper?" Another kiss came down while Ohno's hand was pulling Sho away from the chair.

When the Ohno virus attacked, all Sho could do was to give in and accepted the invasion. He got up, without even bothered to put away his books and papers, and followed his boyfriend to the bed. When they were both under the blanket, Ohno opened his arms and Sho rested his head on the other man's chest. That's how they loved to cuddle in bed.

"Good night, Satoshi." Sho closed his eyes and went to sleep.

"Good night, Sho." Ohno kissed Sho's hair, inhaling the familiar scent.

Sho woke up the next morning feeling refreshed. He's getting used to having Ohno by his side when he slept. It made him at ease. Ohno was still asleep. When Sho saw Ohno's sleeping face, he chuckled. Ohno was drooling!

Ohno opened his eyes lazily and saw Sho's grin. "What so funny?"

"Look at your pillow"

Ohno saw a big wet spot on his pillow and felt a little embarrassed. "I drooled in my sleep since I was a kid."

"You're still like a kid sometime." Sho couldn't help teased Ohno.

"Oh yeah? Then a kid I am -- " Ohno started tickling Sho's body all over, his underarm, his waist.

"No, ah, stop -- ah -- please" Sho tried to avoid Ohno's hands, but was not fast enough.

"Timeout, timeout, please -- " Sho was panting from their playful actions. "I surrendered --"

"Surrendered? Then you need to do what I want." He held Sho tight and pressed their lips together.

Sho was really defeated by this bratty boyfriend of his. He moaned at the unexpected invasion in his mouth but his body reacted and kissed Ohno back.

The kissed went on for a while and became more passionate. Ohno's hands started to wonder up and down Sho's torso and finally made his way inside his pajamas. Sho gasped on the sudden cold sensation from Ohno's hands and pulled away from the kiss.

Sho was blushing hard and could feel his face burning up. Ohno lowered his head for another kiss when the alarm clock went off, making him jumped a little. He had no choice but to release Sho and turned off the alarm. "Stupid clock -- "

"Don't blame the messenger. It's only doing its job." Sho laughed.

Ohno turned back to Sho, palming his cheeks in his hand. He could feel the heat on Sho's face. "I want to explore you more, every part of you.”

Sho became even more bashful. He knew it wasn’t long since they were together, but he did find love and comfort in Ohno that he didn’t have elsewhere. The way the older man treated him, possessive and bratty at times, but patient and caring at others, had totally captured his heart. He felt he’s ready to take their relationship to the next step.

He moved closer to Ohno whispered in his ears. “I’ll be home tonight.”

Ohno’s eyes widened. He was so happy that Sho shared the same desire. He almost wanted to ignore the excursion and just stayed in bed, but it was important to his graduation and he could not miss it.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can. Wait for me.” Relunctantly he gave Sho a big kiss, got out of bed and went to get ready for his outing.

After Ohno left, Sho had breakfast and continued with his term papers. Nishimura told him that Mrs. Ohno had left for a charity event and would be gone for most of the day, so it’s just Mr. Ohno and him in the house. Sho wanted to get closer to the man. He was the ideal father figure that he dreamed of. But the master of the house seemed to be distant and not very approachable.

He went back to his bedroom and picked up his work from where he left off. When he thought about the upcoming night, he was both anxious and nervous, but with a smile on his face. Shooking off the distractive thought, he tried to focus back on his term papers.

Knock Knock

A knock on the door interrupted Sho’s work.

“Who is it?” Sho first thought was Nishimura.

“It’s me.” A deep thick voice came from the other side of the door.

It’s Satoshi’s father!

Ever since his own father showed up, he was more nervous around Ohno’s father. Mr. Ohno had asked him numerous times about his family, which he never properly answered. He could put it off before since he didn’t really have a real relationship with Ohno. But things had changed. If he wanted a future with Ohno, he’d have to reveal the truth sooner or later.

He immediately got up and opened the door.

“Good morning, Mr. Ohno. Satoshi is out on an excursion – ”

“I know.” Ohno’s father said calmly. “May I come in?”

Sho’s heart was beating faster. The old man was not looking for his son. That means he’s looking for – him!

“Certainly. please come in, Mr. Ohno.” Sho said politely.

After Ohno’s father went inside the room, he sat down on the couch. Sho saw that he was holding some papers in his hand, but didn’t know what they were.

“Sho, please come sit down.” Ohno’s father gestured Sho to sit down next to him.

Sho went and sat down on the opposite end of the couch. “Anything I can help you with?”

“I knew that your father is back in town.”
