Part 3

“How long will you be gone this time?” Ohno asked Sho anxiously while making breakfast. Ohno is capable to cook simple things on his own.

“It will be a bit longer this time, may be about five days” Since this will be a difficult assignment, Sho needed more time to plan and execute it carefully.

“That long...” Ohno said in an obviously upsetting tone.

“Ouch” Ohno outburst a loud cry, holding on to his left index finger tight.

“Satoshi, what happened?” Sho immediately went up to look at his loved one. He could see blood coming out from the cut on Ohno's finger. It was a pretty deep cut.

Sho immediately turned on the faucet and let running water cleaned the wound. Then he grabbed a small towel and wrapped around the finger. Leading Ohno to sit down at the dining area, he asked Ohno to put pressure on the cut to stop the bleeding and he went to get the first aid kid. When he saw that the bleeding had stopped he applied sterilizing cream on the cut and carefully wrapped the finger with bandage. He then brought the finger onto his lips and gave it a tender kiss.

“Feel better now, Satoshi?” Sho asked with concerns. He is already running late but couldn't leave before making sure his loved one is alright.

“Yes, thank you Sho-chan. I'm so useless.” Ohno said in a frustrated tone.

“You are not useless. You are the keeper of my heart, remember?” Sho took Ohno's left hand and drew a heart on his palm, then hold it in both of his hands. This has become the secret gesture between the two men. “And you'd better finished the sculpture before I come back.” Sho comforted the upset Ohno. “Promise me you'll take good care of yourself when I'm gone.”

Ohno nodded slowly. “You too, Sho-chan”

Sho got up and prepared to leave. He had this uneasy feeling inside him that he couldn't explain. May be I'm nervous because it's my last assignment. He hoped that's all it is.

Sho gave Ohno a tighter, longer than usual hug goodbye. They also shared a passionate kiss before Ohno finally let him go.

“Goodbye, Satoshi” Somehow this goodbye came with a very inauspicious feeling and he didn't like it.

------------------

This was a difficult assignment indeed. Sho was looking at the assignment envelope left in his apartment.

The guy in the picture was a young man, probably only in his twenties. But what's bothering him was the location to execute. The address was a club at the west side of the city. This area was known to have intensed gang activities. It's hard enough to get out of the area alive if not careful, let alone having to do a job there. It's odd that his superior would choose a place like this, but nonetheless, if he wants to have a life with Ohno, he has to finish this.

He had the urge of calling Ohno, wanting to see how he's doing, wanting to hear his voice. But he refrained himself from doing so. He had to stay focus, he couldn't allow any distractions to be in his way, not even the man he loved so much.

Tonight is the night. His last mission. He checked on his loaded gun one last time and headed out. He couldn't explain the nervousness he felt, which he normally wouldn't have in all his previous jobs. Stay calm and focus, Sho, for Ohno's sake.

Nothing seemed to be out of the ordinary in the area. Sho went into a small cafe, sat down at a table near the window and ordered a cup of black coffee. He noticed everyone in the cafe was staring at him when he entered. Strange faces were usually not welcomed in gang populated area, Sho is well aware of that, so he is being real careful not to make any provoking movements.

He observed the surroundings outside the window. There were several small groups of people hanging around in street corners, drinking and smoking. He wouldn't be surprised if there were guns in their waistbands. The bar outside which he was supposed to carry out his mission was at the far end of the street. Fortunately the street light near it was broken, so lighting is dim around there. He glanced around and reevaluated his timing and escape route. Everything has to go as planned, or else he has no chance of making it out alive.

An hour has past. He left the cafe and slowly walked towards the bar, scrutinizing every little detail in his surroundings.

He stood in a dark alley across the street from the bar, waiting for his target to appear. He took a glimpse at his watch, it's almost one in the morning. Many people started coming out from the bar. With so many people around, he could only plan on distant shooting. There's no way he could go near the target to shoot him at point blank without being seen or even caught.

His target finally appeared. He took his gun out and aimed at the man awaiting for the right distant to fire. Fortunately the man was walking alone. He waited till the man was about ten meters from him. With the dim lighting, that's the farthest distance within which he had confidence in hiting his target.

“Bang”, he pulled the trigger and he saw the man fell to the ground. Mission accomplished, he immediately put the gun back in the jacket and started running. He heard noises of chaos behind him and gun shots to follow. He knew the man's fellow gang members were firing at his direction. The last thing he wanted was to get into a gun battle.

His car was in sight. Once he got in, it will be over. He will be free. But...

He felt a sharp pain coming from his back. Then came another one, this time from his thigh. No longer able to keep his balance, he fell to the ground.

He was hit.

------------------

They were sitting on the grass in the park just like before, feeling the warmth of the sun and sounds of the singing birds.

“Isn't it beautiful here?” Ohno said.

“It sure is, especially when I'm here with you.” Sho said lovingly.

Ohno gave out the sweetest smile Sho had ever seen. “Oh, you face is dirty.” Ohno reached out his right hand and rub slightly on Sho's face.

“Satoshi, you can see?” Sho looked at Ohno in disbelief. “Since when...”

“I said I wanted to see you, remember?” Ohno smirked.

“But...”

“Come on, Sho, I'll race you back home” Without waiting for Sho to finish his sentence, Ohno got up and started running.

“Wait, Satoshi, wait...wait for me....” But Ohno didn't stop, he continued to run, without even turning back, just kept running and running, until he was out of Sho's sight.

“Satoshi, Satoshi....” Sho kept calling, but Ohno is nowhere in sight.

------------------

“Can you hear me? What's your name?”

Sho could vaguely hear someone talking to him.

Where am I? What happened to me?

Suddenly unbearable pain swelled up his whole body. He couldn't move, he couldn't talk, he couldn't breath. He felt like something is sucking his life away from him.

“We're loosing him...” That's all he could hear before everything became black.

When he came to again, he started to remember something, bits and pieces. He was carrying out his last assignment. He finished. He was getting away. Then....he got shot!

“He's stabilized for now, but he has lost a lot of blood. I don't know if he can make it to the hospital.” He heard one person on his side saying to another.

I am dying. I don't want to die. I want to be with Satoshi. Satoshi, what would he do without me? Who's gonna take care of him? He can't see...

“I...” he tried to talk, tried to tell something to the persons, presumably the paramedics, beside him.

“Do you want to say something?” the paramedics asked.

Sho slowly nodded. He needed to save his every bit of energy to say what he's about to say.

The paramedics removed his oxygen mask and let him speak.

“I – I want...” Sho was too weak to speak up. The paramedics bended over and put his ears as close to Sho's mouth as possible, trying hard to catch every word that came out.

“I got it. I'll do as you wish.” The paramedics told Sho as his pulse becoming weaker and weaker.

Lifelessly, Sho gave a satisfactory smile before taking his last breath.

May be it's all for the best.
