[Yama fic] Rental Lover (Chapter 25)

Title: Rental Lover
Pairing: Yama (Ohno x Sho)
Rating: PG-13
Genre: AU, fluff, romance, drama
Summary: Sho found his father in the apartment. Later Ohno showed up and things got out of control.

Chapter 25

Sho ran and ran, not knowing how long he had been running and how far he had gone. He vaguely heard voices calling him from behind, but he chose to ignore them. Those voices are his lover’s, his friends’, the persons he missed so much. But he couldn’t bring himself to face them, at least not yet.

Shortness of breath made him stopped. He found a stairwell and sat down to catch his breath. Leaning his head against the stair handle, he tried to recall what just happened. He was thankful that no one was hurt, which was what he worried about the most. Tanaka was arrested, but that’s not a bad thing. That person was nothing more than an injurious companion of his father. His father would be better off without such bad influence around. Sho was just glad that his father was not caught.

He hated himself for running away from Ohno, again. The man didn’t deserve the abandonment, not without a proper explanation. But that’s the least of his worries now. He needed to find his father before his old man did anymore foolish things. Not wasting another second he hurried back to the apartment hoping to find his father there.

He opened the front door to a complete darkness. His heart sank a bit. If his father wasn’t there, he didn’t know where else to look. There is a possibility that Tanaka might expose his father which would make him a fugitive. Then it would be dangerous if he was confronted by the police.

“Papa – ” Sho called out into the dark empty apartment. “Papa, are you there?” He turned on the light in the living room and started looking in every room. “Papa – ”

“Sho, I’m here – ” Sho’s father came out from the bathroom. He had changed his clothes but still looked a little nervous. He looked around the apartment seemed to be making sure that there’s no one other than his son being there.

“Papa, thank goodness you’re alright. I’ve been so worried.” Sho had not been so glad to see his father for a long long time. He thought he didn’t care about his old man anymore. He thought he would want his father to just disappear and out of his life forever. But that’s not the case. He still cared. Afterall, no matter how bad a guy that man had become, he’s still his father, the only family he had left.

“What - what do you mean? Why wouldn’t I be alright?” Sho’s father asked conversely, trying to hide his nervousness.

Sho didn’t know how to answer. Was he supposed to know about their plan to burglarize the Ohno’s? No, he wasn’t. Was he supposed to know the police was involved and his father was nearly caught? No, he wasn’t. He went to get a drink of water hoping to avoid answering his father’s question.

Now that he knew his father was alright, he had to think about how to deal with the situation, and he had to come up with something quick.

"Papa, let's go to Osaka." Sho could only come up with one idea -- skip town. Ohno’s smiling chubby face flashed across Sho’s mind. The thought of being further away from Ohno and possibility never see him again hurt like hell. But getting away as far as possible wasn’t only for his father’s sake, but for the Ohno’s well being as well.

Leaving town was not a bad idea to Sho's father at this point, though he's still surprised that his son suddenly brought. "Why do you want to leave town?"

"I -- I got a job offer in Osaka, a very good one, paid very well." Sho just said the first excuse came to his mind. "I can give you more money." He hoped money was still a lure for his greedy father.

If it were before, such an offer was a big temptation to Sho's father. He would have taken it without second thoughts. But the timing of this aroused suspicion in his crafty mind, given that his son never offered to give him money without being asked.

"What's with you tonight? Saying you're worried about me and then offering to give me more money by taking a out of town job. Why are you being so nice to your old man? You acted just like the time you offered to shine my shoes after you broke my typewriter when you were eight."

Sho was taken aback when he heard his father mentioned one of his childhood incidents. He really didn't expect his father to still remember it. Memories of the few good years of his early life kept rushing back. His father was probably not as incorrigible as he had thought. With this slim hope as incentive, he decided to try and start fresh with his father somewhere else. May be, just may be, they could still have a second chance to go back to where they were as father and son.

“I just thought we could have a fresh start somewhere else.” This was not an excuse. He truly wanted to give it a try. After so many years of drought in family love, even a little sprinkle would irrigate hope in him.

“Alright. My luck here isn’t getting any better. A change of ground may change my fortune.” Sho’s father finally agreed.

“Great. We’ll leave early tomorrow. I don’t think we have much to pack anyway.” Sho did feel a glimpse of sadness, but the pros for leaving town outweight the cons by far here.

“I’ll need to stop by Tanaka’s on our way tomorrow. He hasn’t returned my call all night. May be he would want to come with us.” Sho’s father said as he fixed himself a drink.

When the two men arrived at the Ohno’s villa, they went with their plan and sneaked inside the Ohno villa by climbing the big tree with branches hanging inside the tall fence. They proceeded into the garden area and broke the lock of the patio door to go into the main house. Each went into separate rooms looking for valuables and intented to meet back at the apartment in one hour. Not long after Sho’s father went into the living room he heard police siren. “Shit!” He cursed his luck but hurried out the house, only able to grab a handheld tablet with him. He didn’t have time to look for Tanaka thinking his friend should be able to take care of himself. He was caught off guard when the spot lights outside the main house all light up. But he still managed to get away from the villa when the police cars approached.

“Tanaka won’t be able to come with us. He’d probably be put away by the police for a long time – ” Sho blurted out when he heard the mention of the man’s name which he immediately regret.

“What are you saying, Sho?”

Sho found his father looking at him with wide opened eyes. He could feel fear growing inside him. He should never fear his own father.

“I – ”

“How do you know Tanaka was caught by the police? What do you know?” Sho’s father kept pressing.

“I don’t know anything. Can we just get on with packing and leave tomorrow? Please Papa – ” Sho begged, but his father was not letting the matter go so easily.

“There’s something you’re not telling me, isn’t it? You acted strangely tonight, suggested to leave town out of the blue and now said the police caught Tanaka. Tell me, what do you know?” He yelled at his son demanding answers.

Sho knew there’s no use to pretend anymore. His father wouldn’t give it a rest without getting some answers. “I heard you and Tanaka-san talking earlier today about – ”

“About going to the Ohno villa?” His father cut him off and Sho nodded reluctantly.

“So you told your boyfriend about our plan? Baka, baka, how could you sided with outsiders against your own father? You want us to get caught?” He was really pissed off. His son had ruined the biggest operation in his life that would not only relieved him from the load shark, but would also give him plenty of betting money.

“Papa, I just didn’t want anyone to get hurt. I was scared of what might happen if there was confrontation. You’ve got to believe me. All I wanted was to scare you away. What you did was not right.” Sho pleaded, not knowing he unintentionally revealed something that made his father even more pissed.

“Scare us away – the police – ” Sho’s father put two and two together. “You’re the one who called the police?” He stepped up to Sho and grabbed him by the wrist. “How dare you?”

“It hurts, Papa” Sho tried to get away but his father’s grib was really tight. “Please let go -- ”

“How did you know Tanaka was caught? Were you there? You want to witness your old man get caught, don’t you?” He was furious.

“Yes – I meant – No, of course I don’t want you to get caught. I only saw Tanaka-san being escorted to the police car when I arrived there. I don’t know how he got caught.” Sho was really scared. Despite everything his father did to him, he was never violent. It was the first time his father was hurting him physically. “We can go to Osaka and start over. After we leave tomorrow, everything will be alright.”

“I know, you want to get rid of me so you can go back to your boyfriend. Why do you insist of leaving tomorrow? Are you buying time for the police to come get me? Or are you taking me to the police tomorrow? Huh?” He tightened his grasp as he yelled.

Sho could see fire in his father’s eyes. “No, no, I really want to go to Osaka with you. Let me go, please, you’re hurting me – ” He continued to plead but stopped struggling. He knew he’s not as strong as his father and further attempt to break away might risk his wrist being broken. But Sho’s father had no intention to let go.

“You want to go to Osaka with me. Fine! Then we’ll leave immediately. I won’t fall into your trap!” As he said that he pulled Sho by his wrist and dragged him towards the door.

“No – Papa – No – ” Sho instinctively tried to resist.

His father ignored his plea and continued to pull him to the door. Just as he opened the door and about to go out, a fist came flying his way and punched him on the face. It hit him so hard that he fell the the ground and released Sho.

“You are not taking Sho anywhere!”

Sho was shocked by the sequence of actions, but he’s even more shocked when he looked up and saw the familiar face at the door.

“Satoshi – ”

Ohno quickly pulled Sho away from his father and hid him behind himself. What Sho had feard the most – a confrontation between his father and Ohno – was finally happening.

Sho’s father stood up and tried to grab his son, but Ohno shielded Sho from every move made by the man. The old man tried to hit Ohno, but the younger man was able to dodge the punches and kicks coming his way, still protecting Sho behind him.

“Get out of the way, you rich spoiled brat! I’m taking my son and you can’t stop me.” The old man shouted as he continued his attack.

“Oh no, you’re not. You can’t hurt him anymore. I’m going to make sure of that.” Ohno was not backing down.

Seeing he was not getting an upper hand of the situation, Sho’s father took out the knife which he apparently still carried in his jacket and pointed to Ohno.

“Satoshi, just go. I don’t want you to get hurt.” Sho got panicked. His father was out of control and could possibly do any unimaginable things at this point. “Papa, don’t hurt him. I’ll go with you.” Sho took a step forward and stood in between Ohno and his father. He would protect Ohno from harm’s way at all cost.

“Sho, no – ” Ohno yelled.

“Don’t move! Drop your knife or I’ll shoot!” Two policemen ouside the apartment commanded as they pointed their guns at Sho’s father.

When Ohno chased after Sho from the villa, he caught up on him not long after. He saw that Sho was distressed so rather than facing up with him immediately, he followed Sho from a distance and never let him out of sight, giving the man some space. When he realized Sho’s father was in the apartment he notified the police and stayed guarded outside. He was waiting for the police to arrive before taking any action, but when Sho’s father tried to get away with Sho, he couldn’t let that happen and thus the confrontation. They were too busy attacking and defending that they didn’t hear the police approaching.

“Drop your weapon!” The police commanded again.

Sho’s father had no choice but to comply. Immediately the police came over and handcuffed the man and took him into custody.

“Is anyone hurt?” One of the policeman asked Ohno and Sho.

Sho was still in shock so Ohno replied, “No, we are alright. Thank you for coming so quickly. This is the man who tried to burglarize my home with the other man who’s already caught. He was trying to kidnap my boyfriend. Please take him away.”

“Will do. Please come by the station to make a statement tomorrow.” The policemen grabbed Sho’s father on each side and pulled him to the police car.

“I knew it. I knew you’d betray me, Sho. Ha ha ha, you’re no better than me. You betrayed your own father, ha ha ha – ” Sho’s father kept yelling as he was marched to the police car. His tone of voice was cold and condemning. Even Ohno had goosebumps upon hearing it.

When the police car was finally out of sight, Ohno turned back his attention to Sho. The younger man had not said a word ever since the police arrived. Ohno knew it must be difficult for Sho to witness his own father got arrested, so he went up to Sho and wrapped his arms around him. “It’s OK now. Everything is going to be alright.” He whispered into Sho’s ears to comfort his lover.

Sho still showed no reaction. He didn’t say anything nor he returned the hug. He just stood there motionless and Ohno let him, but he had no idea what was on the younger man’s mind.

Then all of a sudden, Sho put his hands on Ohno’s shoulders and pushed him away. The push was so hard and together with the unexpectedness of the action almost caused Ohno to tumble.

“What was that for?” Ohno asked discontentedly.

“Why did you do this?” Sho grumbled.

“Do what?” Ohno didn’t understand why Sho was so upset.

“Why did you call the police?” Sho finally spoke out his complaint. “You had my father arrested!”

Ohno frowned. “Why are you even upset about this? I thought you’d be happy that he’s gone and out of your life!”

“I never said I wanted him out of my life. He’s my father. We still have a chance as a family. He’d change, he’d come around. I know he would.”

“Don’t kid yourself, Sho. That man is hopeless. He had done nothing but ruined your life. You’re better off without him.” Ohno was surprised and unhappy by Sho’s disapproval of his action. He was sure what he did was best for Sho.

“You can’t decide what’s better for me. You have no right to take him away from me.” Sho resented Ohno for destroying the last glimpse of hope that he had to have a new life with his father, although it’s just possibly a one in a million chance that it would actually happen.

“I have every right to call the police. That man tried to burglarize my home and even used a knife as weapon. My family could be in danger and you knew it. Isn’t that why you asked Nino to warn us in the first place? Why are you being so unreasonable now?” Ohno was getting frustrated. Every bit of him believed what he did was 100% the right thing to do and he couldn’t believe the person who was victimized the most by that man didn’t support him.

“He is my only family. Don’t you understand?” Sho felt equally frustrated, and a lot of guilt. Though he didn’t call the police himself, he was the reason Ohno found them and led the police to them. He was the ultimate cause for this father’s arrest. “I’m such a failure.”

“Don’t say that. You’re never a failure.” Seeing tears falling on Sho’s cheeks, Ohno softened. He went up to Sho and wanted to take the man he loved into his arms. “You still have me. We are your family now.”

As soon as Ohno touched Sho, the younger man jumped. Ohno’s words reminded him once again that his only family was just taken away because of the man in front of him.

“Don’t -- I can’t be with you.” Sho stepped backwards but avoiding eye contact with Ohno.

“What are you saying Sho?” Ohno couldn’t believe what he just heard.

“You heard me. I can’t be with the person who got my father arrested. What more do I need to say?” Sho was hurting inside, but seeing Ohno fomented his guilty conscience which was more unbearable to him at this moment.

“Sho, me and my family were nothing but nice and good to you. But what had your father done? Caused you your scholarship and kept demanding money from you to say the least. Now he had added criminal acts to his resume. How could you choose him over us, over me? I thought you love me!” Ohno was devastated. He thought the biggest obstacles between he and Sho was Sho’s worthless father. With him out of their lives, they would be happy together. He never expected Sho would blame him for giving the man what he deserved.

Sho does love Ohno, but his father’s arrest had forced him to admit the fact that his father was not only a gambling addict, a con-artist, but also a criminal. When reality hits, it hurts. These were too much for him to take in.

“Just go – I don’t want to see you now.” Sho covered his face with his hands and turned around, sobbing but biting his lips to prevent himself from crying out.

“Fine! If that’s what you want. Like father like son. I should have listened to my father.” Ohno had enough of Sho’s senselessness. He never had to beg for love and couldn’t stand someone he loved turning his back on him. Most importantly he didn’t think he had done anything wrong to deserve this rejection.

Ohno left the apartment without another word, closing the door behind him as hard as he could.

The slam of the door hit Sho’s heart as hard as it hit the door frame. His world has just turned upside down in one night.

“Wow, it’s very brave of you. I’d just hide in my room if I knew there’s a burglar in my home.” Nino said when he and Jun were sitting in the living room of the Ohno villa, each holding a bottle of beer in his hand. “Why didn’t you just leave the house with Ohno-kun? It could be dangerous.”

Jun was a little embarrassed by the praise, especially when Nino was all excited and anxious when Jun told him what happened. “I just took advantage of situation. If that man didn’t go into the enclosed study room, I wouldn’t be able to lock him in until the police came. I’m glad Ojisan and Obasan were not home.” Jun took a sip of the beer and pulled Nino closer to him. “By the way, thank you for notifying the police. They came just in time.”

“Me? No, I didn’t call the police. I thought you did after I called you.” Nino sat up and looked at Jun startlingly.

“I didn’t. I was too nervous that it never crossed my mind.”

“May be it’s Ohno-kun?”

“It can’t be him. He was with me when you called and then he went to turn on the lights in the garden after we heard noises outside. Besides, his phone ran out of battery when he came home from your place.”

Both wondered why the police came so quickly if none of them made the call. Then all of a sudden both looked at each other and said almost at the same time.

Right at this moment, they heard the front door opened and closed with loud bangs. Then they saw Ohno walked past the living room and went straight towards the hallway. He didn’t look at them nor said anything.

“Satoshi-kun – ” Jun called out but Ohno didn’t stop and kept walking in fast pace.

“Ohno-kun – ” Nino called out also. “Where’s Sho-kun? Did you catch up with him?”

Ohno entered the hallway without stopping, and finally responded before he was out of sight.

“Don’t ever mention this person to me again! We’re over!”

The two men in the living room were stunned by what they heard, but neither knew what to make of it.

To Be Continued....

So glad to see the update!

But guh, somehow it's gotten more complicated. The whole thing can't be settled even if Sho's dad got arrested, I have guessed that from early on. I am really curious of how things are going to be between Ohno and Sho in the end; and even if they've patched things up between them, how about Ohno's parents?

Somehow I can sympathize with Sho, and yet I also think he's kinda stupid; so conflicting xD. I can understand the sentiments of not wanting to cause harm to your own flesh and blood, but being stubborn to admit that his father will need to learn his own lessons after what he had done; he's only making it worse for his father. Especially since it was obvious that his father has not even a single trace of compassion left for his only son (unless there's something you're keeping from us and will be shown later). It's fine if the father was only affecting Sho (since Sho would gallantly accept it as his fillial duty), but to ignore the fact that his father would not have any second thoughts about harming other people; I think Sho is being a bit too selfish here. (although there cd be hints of things not exactly as it appears to be, but I guess I will have to wait for things to reveal itself later)

Still, I pray that Sho will find his peace of mind and finally accepts that there are things beyond his control; and that he deserves true happiness. I can't wait for the next update~

Before I start reading this chapter, I took a glimpse at the end.
It spoil my excitement of what happened in this chapter.
Sho could be selfish and stupid but, yeah, you can't just easily accept the fact that your own father was put behind bars.. This relationship is getting more complicated..

Thanks for the update.. Can't wait for the next chapter..

first of all, thank you for the update :)
second, i was sooo in high spirits when sho's father finally got arrested! serves him right! XD
i had a feeling sho would hate ohno but the way you wrote it made all the more sense to me than when i just thought of it.
sho was in denial, and it's understandable. it's hard to think the worst about the people you care for, especially in sho's case, since it's his father involved.
but i think sho is being naive. his father has now resulted to hurting him physically and obviously things are getting worse.
and i know sho can only blame ohno because it's easier to cope when there's someone to take the fall. i hope sho realizes ohno was acting upon what he believed to be right and that things would turn out fine between them.
i'm looking forward to the next update :D i really love this series <3

I think I understand Sho's feeling.
It's hard to accept that the only one family get arrest by lover although he is the bad person. Father is still father, if he could be good even one in brilliance chance.
But I hope both Sho and Ohno could understand each other feeling as soon.

OmG what did you do to my heart .. I feel bad for both .. Sho and Ohno .. Ohno is right .. he did the right think .. Sho´s Father needs to be imprisoned .. I would think like Ohno too, it´s best if the Father is away and SHo can start his Life anew .. on the other Side I can understand Shbo .. he had only his Father left and he always tried his best to chnage things and to chnage his Father .. he only wnated his lovely Father from the past back and he still hoped he can manage it .. after all he did for his Dad he hoped he will change (but Ohno´s righ here .. as long as Sho is with his Father he will never change perhpas he gets a Chance to change in Prison) .. Sho is devasted and under Shock .. after some thinking he will see that it was the best since the Father veen tried to harm people with Knifes .. but not in this Moment after all what happend .. He loves Ohno but he just can´t stand this "happy Man" with his "happy Family" right know .. and Ohnos Father was also not nice to Sho .. how should Sho ever face Ohnos Dad again .. esp. after what Sho´s FAther did .. Ohno´s Father was also right .. it´s all so complicated .. Sho all alone crying his heart out in this moment .. and nobody on his Side .. :( He must feel so lonely :( Reality is so bad :( what hurt me most was "Like Father like Son" coming out of Ohnos Mouth .. that´s the worst for me (even if he said it while beeing angry) Sho´s never like his Father in no ways .. :( It was pretty much unfair .. In then End Sho´s Father "just" tried to save his Life with the stealing .. he wnated to be safe from the LoanSharks .. btw I woder if these people will be quit now since he´s in Prison or if they torture Sho now??? .. All in All it is so comlicated .. :(pehaps both needs Time and Sho needs his Life to be more stable again before these 2 have the Chance to speak with each other again .. :(

okay i was happy that sho's father got arrested but sad at the fact sho pushed ohno away. so now it's even more complicated. i wonder when they will be able to be happy with each other again. poor sho he really does care about his father. if i was him i would have abandoned him even if he was all i had, well that's probably because i never was close to my father so i can't understand that too well. but it's sad that he tried so hard to keep his father from getting into trouble and his father just totally lost all the love he had for sho in my opinion almost like he just snapped when he hurt sho. ohno did the right thing he saved sho from the biggest obstacle in his life. okay so now that i'm totally clueless as to what will happen next i'll wait patiently for your next update

thanks for sharing~!

Aww poor Yama!

I think Ohno did the right thing going to rescue his loved one and do think it is unfair for Sho to push him away. But I guess it can't be helped since Sho had tried so hard to maintain balance and even control between the two sides. It probably hurts him that his own plan and involvement led to the arrest of his father. After all, he could've called the cops long ago if he wanted his father arrested. I hope Yama will be able to find peace, and Sho won't have to cry all by himself any longer.

Oh myyy... things getting more complicated >.< But I understand why Sho became frustrating like this. Sho always hoping to be a whole family again with his father, as mush as his father was being a bastard, some son just couldn't let his father just like that, apparently >.<
And I think what he needs right now is more and more support! But now Ohno got mad at him too... I just hope duo matsumiya could at least persuade Ohno that Sho now is actually needed him the most, and to Sho that, please, he actually have people that care of him more than his father! *enraged*
Sorry for rambling here but I really looking forward to the next!
Thank you very much for the update! ^^

AHHHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!! Ive been waiting & gosh was it sooo good to read!!!
Sho is too selfless that in a sense hes closes himself off from anyone to ever reach out to him ! Ohno was trying so hard but Sho just kept putting those walls up. I understand that Ohno is still Ohno hence why he backed off but i wished he tried harder!! like stay with Sho in the apartment ! Cos really Sho is grieving & needs someone there with him even if he vocalized wanting to be alone!
well thats where Nino & J come in right?? knock some sense into him guys!!

thank you for sharing as always!
