Chapter 26

When reality forced you to face what you had been avoiding and denying head on, you’d found that your faith was so fragile and you had been so naïve in believing that the good old days would still come back someday. You’re nothing but a big fool.

This apartment was not Sho’s favorite place to begin with, and now it seemed even more desolated. All these years Sho had never felt so lonely, not even when he was living and supporting himself. He felt totally empty inside. Rather than saying that he pushed Ohno away was because he couldn’t face the man who sent his father to jail, it was more like he couldn’t face himself. He couldn’t face the reality and shame of having such a heartless worthless father and the fact that his loved ones all got hurt because of him.

It’s not hard to imagine Sho wouldn’t get a good night sleep that night, despite his emotional exhaustion and crying himself to sleep for the first time. Waking up over and over by images of his father accusing him of betrayal, images of his father hurting Ohno and his family, and images of Ohno slamming the door behind him that he couldn’t even tell what’s real and what’s dream anymore. What he also didn’t know was that while his mind was in a blurring state, he called out for ‘Satoshi’ endless times, the man whom he pushed away and yet the one whom he needed the most.

**********************************

Both Jun and Nino were stunned when Ohno stormed into the house and announced that his relationship with Sho was over. Judging from the anger they saw in Ohno, it’s not likely that he had any bit of joke in there. Something must have happened that led to the drastic turn of events and they wanted to know what that was. But they knew also that at this state Ohno was like a hedgehog. Anyone who attempted to get close will be poked. They planned to wait till the morning to give the man some time to calm down before making any attempts. Jun would talk to his cousin while Nino tried to get the truth from his childhood friend.

“Good morning, Satoshi-kun” Jun had been waiting for Ohno to come out of his bedroom since early in the morning. He didn’t want to miss his cousin in case Ohno went out. His own restlessness from the odeal the night before was also part of the reason he got up early.

“Where are Papa and Mama?” Ohno didn’t show any emotion, but Jun could clearly see black circles under his eyes.

“They went to the police station to give a statement. They need to bring an inventory list on what’s missing in the house.” Jun wanted to start a conversation before getting into the subject.

Ohno said nothing further. He poured a cup of coffee and stood there circling the rim of the cup with his fingers without actually drinking the liquid inside.

“So – wanna talk about it?” Jun finally started. “What happened with you and Sho-kun?”

“There is nothing to talk about. You heard what I said.” Ohno snapped.

“But why? You told me you love Sho so much just yesterday. What made this changed in one night?” Jun kept asking.

“I should have listened to Papa. I did everything for him and he ended up choosing his worthless father over me!” Ohno steamed up. “You told me, Jun-kun, how could he do that to me?”

“What do you mean by he chose his father over you?” Jun didn’t understand. “Where is his father anyway?”

“In jail – and he blamed me for it! Can you believe it?” Ohno raised his voice towards the end. He’s still hurting, and angry.

“Just tell me what happened, Satoshi-kun. You are not making any sense to me.”

Ohno then told Jun about how he followed Sho to the apartment, called the police and stopped his father from leaving with Sho.

“It’s good that you stopped him and called the police. Who knows what he would do if he got away. That man was out of control.” Jun commented.

“You also agree with what I did, don’t you?” Ohno asked eagerly and Jun nodded.

“Then how come Sho thought otherwise?” Ohno said while slowly sitting down. His tone had turned from angry and harsh to soft and sad, knowing very well that he’s asking a question that neither of them had the answer to.

Jun was silent. He didn’t want to interrupt, letting his cousin to take his time to continue.

“That bastard was pointing a knife at me. If the police hadn’t come, I don’t know what would happen. But Sho accused me of causing his dear father to be caught. He said I took his only family away from him. You told me, Jun-kun, aren’t we more a family to him than that old man?”

“I think he’s scared and couldn’t think straight. It’s understandable after all that had happened.” Jun tried to sooth the irritation. He could understand but still didn’t concur with how Sho reacted either. He also didn’t want to add fuel to the already burning fire.

“He left me to be with his father. He didn’t care about me, he didn’t care if we got hurt or even got killed by that heartless man. We meant nothing to him.”

“That’s not true, Satoshi-kun, and you knew it. You’re just hurting.” Jun continued his effort to salvage the situation. “If he didn’t care about you, he wouldn’t ask Nino to warn us last night. If he chose his father over you, he wouldn’t tell the police to come here. He did all of these because he loves you and your family.”

“What did you say?” Ohno widened his eyes. “Didn’t Nino call the police after he called us?”

“I thought so too at first, but after talking with Nino afterwards, he said he didn’t. And the only way that the police would know about the attempted burglary and got here that fast was because Sho-kun called them.”

“Then why was he so upset that I called the police? He should understand why I did it.”

Jun sighed. His cousin had been living a good life and loved by both of his parents. He might not have realized that there are others who had to fight and struggle for the family love that seemed to have come so easy for him. Jun himself had gone through family crisis himself. His parents were divorced when he was little. Even though both parents still loved him very much and he had lived with them separately, it’s still not the same as having both parents together. He missed one when living with the other. He could at least relate to what Sho went through in fear of losing a parent.

“Satoshi-kun, I’m sure Sho knew you did it out of love for him. He’s just sad and in denial at the moment. He’ll come around and realize what you did was the right thing. Just give him some time.”

“He can have all the time he needs. He is the one who shut me out and pushed me away. If he didn’t treasure me, why should I?” Ohno got up and headed out.

“Satoshi-kun – ”

“I don’t want to talk about it anymore.” He needed some air and wanted to be alone.

Jun didn’t stop Ohno. It might be good for him to think things through himself. Ohno did nothing wrong, but it’s a complicated and delicate situation. He had to find ways to come to terms himself before he could make peace with Sho.

While Jun was talking to Ohno, Nino was also doing his part in helping his friends. He called Sho’s number a few times before Sho finally picked up. Hearing his friend’s dejected voice, he’s most certain that Sho was equally if not more distressed by whatever happened between him and Ohno. He declined Nino’s suggestion to meet up at first, but eventually agreed. He had asked Nino for help and his friend deserved to know what happened. He owed it to Nino.

They met up at the park where they used to play in their childhood. This place had a lot of their best memories. They flew kites, played soccer and caught dragonflies together there. Lives were simple back then, but they were happy. Sho was happy. After a day at school where Sho's grades were usually good except for arts class, he helped his mother did some grocery shopping before heading home. Some afternoon snacks would be waiting for him. Sho usually played with Nino after he finished his homework before dinner at the park. Dinner around the table was their precious family time at which they shared fun things with each other. Then Sho and his father would spend some father and son time together before he tucked him in bed.

"Do you remember we used to come here and played everyday?" Sho was unexpectedly calm when they met at the park, but judging from his red swollen eyes, Nino could imagine what his friend went through emotionally the night before.

"We didn't have any worries back then." Sho continued while watching children playing in the park, which reminded him of how his life used to be when he was little.

"Oh yes we did. We worried about being late for dinner and being scolded by mama. We worried about our kites being cut by the neighboring boys and lost them. We, well, I worried about failing the Science class as I sucked at memorizing formulas. I worried about the report card day coming." Nino sat next to his friend remebering the good old days. They both laughed.

"You know, Nino. I'd give anything, anything at all to have those days back."

"Sho-kun, you know we can't. We grow up and things changed. We may or may not like it, but we can't help it."

"I know, but I just don't understand why I have such bad lucks. Things never go my way."

"Don’t be so pessimistic. Good things happened to you too. You met Ohno-kun and his family, didn’t you? And you have me and Jun-kun as friends, unless you thought befriending with me is a bad thing.” Nino took the opportunity to bring Ohno into the conversation.

Sho took a deep breath. “I know what you’re trying to do, Nino, and I appreciated it. But you won’t understand how I felt. I just couldn’t be with Satoshi now.”

“You’re right, I don’t. I don’t even know what happened between you two last night. All I know is that nothing’s worth keeping you from Ohno-kun. You two love each other and are so good together. What you have is worth fighting for, no matter what came between you.”

Sho was moved by what Nino said. For a moment he actually believed what his friend said was true. But every time he thought of Ohno the image of his father being handcuffed and Ohno’s father’s impeaching look kept flashing back to his mind. He felt he had failed to protect all the persons he loved.

“It’s not that simple, Nino. Satoshi almost got hurt because of me. Papa is in jail because of me. I should have known better than to let myself believed I could make a difference, but I ended up failing everyone I loved. I’m such a joke.”

Nino was surprised to hear that Sho’s father was in jail. It must have happened after Ohno caught up with them. Although he still didn’t know the details, he could guess that this must be the fuse that led to Ohno and Sho’s fight.

“Baka! That’s total nonsense.” Nino was annoyed by his friend’s fatuity. “Your father is the real joke here. That man belongs behind bars and don’t blame yourself for his senselessness.”

“No matter what he did, he’s still my father. I don’t want him to go to jail. Satoshi shouldn’t have called the police. I was going to leave town with him and he wouldn’t be able to hurt Satoshi and his family again.”

“Then he’s just hurt someone else, and may be hurt you too. Wake up, Sho-kun. Your father would never change. May be some jail time will actually do him some good. Don’t throw away your future with Ohno-kun because of him. Ohno-kun loves you and you still care about him --”

“Nino please – ” Sho interrupted. “I can’t face Satoshi now, and especially not his parents. All I did was giving them problems and pain.”

Nino didn’t have the heart to push Sho any further, although he’s still mad about Sho’s ignorance. Too much had happened and his friend needed some time to put himself together. “May be some time to calm down and think is good for you. I hope you can bring some sense back to your stupid mind. And I thought you’re smarter than me – ” He wrapped his arms around his friend and gave him a gentle hug. “No matter what you still have me as your friend. Don’t you ever forget that.”

“Thank you, Nino – ” Sho really needed some comfort and he’s glad he still had a shoulder to lean on.

“So what are you going to do now?” Nino asked about releasing the embrace after a while.

“I plan to go to Osaka. I need a fresh start and some time to think, and I can’t do it here.”

“OK, but promise to call me once you settle down.”

“I promise. But Nino, please don’t tell Satoshi, not that he would care after how I pushed him away.”

Sho’s voice softened to almost whispering towards the end of the sentence. Nino could feel the sadness when Sho said that. “I really hope you two can find your ways back together.”

Two weeks passed and nothing much had changed. Ohno started to go out with his old friends to karaoke and parties again. When he was at home he was awfully quiet, and he would avoid the subject of Sho by all means in every conversation. Jun told Sho’s mother what happened that how things stand between Ohno and Sho. Although she liked Sho and didn’t think any of what happened was Sho’s fault, she thought it’s something that the two young men needed to work out on their own. She could only hope their love was strong enough to get through this.

Jun and Nino, on the other hand, were getting frustrated. Their relationship was developing steadily, but they hate to see their friends being apart. They feared that the two broken hearts didn’t get mended soon, they would stay broken forever.

Nino was sitting at the dining table eating lunch with Jun. Ohno was sitting on the sofa at the far end of the room doing something with his laptop. These days Nino and Jun didn’t know how to approach Ohno. The subjects of their conversations were mostly on their two distant friends which Ohno avoided talking about.

“There must be something we can do.” Nino said after taking a glance at Ohno. “Neither of them did anything wrong. How come they are in such a deadlock?” He spoke very softly so Ohno couldn’t hear him.

“I know, it’s so frustrating. They are both so stubborn. Sho-kun wouldn’t come back to see Satoshi-kun and we promised not to tell Satoshi-kun where Sho is.” Jun concurred. “If one of them is willing to take the first step, I’m sure they can work things out.”

Nino nodded. “I wish they would bump into each other on the street on something, but they are too far apart for that.” He laughed at his own silly thought. “Now only fate can bring them together again.”

Jun paused for a moment. Then he suddently gave a pack on Nino’s cheek and said, “You’re a genius!”

Nino was taken totally off guard by Jun’s actions. “What is it?”

“Sometimes coincidences can be created – ” Jun whispered into Nino’s ears before getting up and went into the hallway.

Nino was still in a mist when Jun came back out after a short while followed by Ohno’s mother.

“Satoshi – ”

Ohno looked up at this mother and said. “Yes, Mama?”

“I want to go to the Tenjin Matsuri in Osaka this year and I want you to go with me.” Ohno’s mother said. She is not asking, but demanding, which meant there’s no room for negotiation or refusal.

Jun said back down on his original seat and gave Nino a wink.
