Chapter 29

The newly reconciled couple chose to take a morning walk back to Ohno’s hotel. Sleeping under the tree the whole night in a twisted position gave Ohno a sore back, but they didn’t mind taking a slow pace while enjoying the cool morning breeze.

They told each other how things were since they were apart and how much they missed each other. When Ohno told Sho that Nino and Jun also came, Sho immediately realized it was all their friends’ doing.

“I was supposed to meet with Nino at Sakurano Palace Park the day before, but I waited for an hour and he didn’t show up.” Sho told Ohno, still didn’t know what happened. “Calling him got no answer, so I left.”

“We were there. He and Jun-kun took me there in the afternoon. No wonder why they seemed to be looking for something, or someone, but we got separated by the crowd. They wanted to set us up!”

“Well, their plan didn’t work out. There’re just too many people in the festival to meet up with someone.” Sho did appreciate his friends intention though.

“But we did meet up, didn’t we? Even without any planning. This makes our reunion all the more special.”

Ohno stopped walking and turned to face Sho. “You’re everything to me, Sho.” He pressed his lips onto the taller man’s. It was a short shallow kiss, but the soft ginger touch already made Sho felt like an electric current flowing through his body.

When they parted, Ohno noticed two pairs of foreign eyes staring at them. He saw two middle-aged women carrying grocery bags in their hands standing not far from them. Sho noticed them as well and wanted to pull away from Ohno, but the older man wouldn’t let go. The disgusted looks on the women’s faces told Ohno what was on their minds and he had no intention to hide his feelings.

He gave the women a ‘so what’ look and then tugged Sho into an embrace, kissing the younger man again, only this time was a deeper longer kiss. Sho was got off guard on Ohno’s actions and was a little embarrassed but didn’t resist. He didn’t want to make it awkward for Ohno in front of others by showing any unwillingness for the intimacy.

Not until Ohno saw the women walked away from the corner of his eye did he finally break the kiss.

“What was that for, Satoshi?” Sho asked rolling his eyes.

“I don’t like the looks on their faces. I have to show them we are in love and there’s nothing to be ashamed of. We don’t need to hide.” Ohno said flauntily. Several months ago he wouldn’t even admit that he could be in love with a man, but now he was proud of finding the love of his life, even when this love was shared by someone of the same gender. At the back of his mind, he was amazed by how love can change someone.

“Still, kissing in public like that is so embarrassing – ” Sho could feel his face still buring hot.

“Are you saying you’re embarrassed for being with me?” Ohno raised his voice a little and pretended to be mad. He suddenly had the urge or teasing his boyfriend.

“No, of course not, it’s just – ” Bashfulness and anxieties caused Sho’s tongue to twist. He didn’t want to say the wrong thing and created misunderstanding when they just got back together. “I – ”

Ohno chuckled seeing the anxious look of the younger man. Sho soon realized he was being jollied.

“Baka!” He pouted and ran off leaving Ohno behind.

“Hey, wait for me. Sho! I’m sorry – ” Ohno immediately followed. He’s not letting Sho out of his sight even again.

“I will beat you this time, for sure.” Jun said while keep pressing the buttons on the game controller he’s holding.

“You’ve said this fifteen times already. Go ahead, give your best shot.” Nino laughed. He was the master of video games among his friends and Jun was no competition.

Knock Knock Knock

“Go away, nobody’s home.” Nino just shouted to the door, eyes still on the television screen and hands still motioning the game controller.

“It could be Obasan.” Jun paused his game and went to open the door. When he saw it was Ohno standing outside the door from the peep-hole, he unlocked the door but immediately turned around and went back to his game.

Ohno opened the door and went inside with Sho followed. But Nino and Jun, with their backs facing the door and too busy playing games, didn't notice.

"I see that Nino had successfully recruited a gaming companion." Ohno said while entering. "I feel sorry for you Jun-kun. This can be a big blow to your self-esteem."

"No, no, no -- don't die on me. Ah, not again -- " Jun lost the game and threw the controller on the floor.

"Ha ha ha. Defeat number sixteen." Nino said proudly. "And you, Ohno-san, where have you been the whole night? You didn't even bring your phone -- " He turned to Ohno only to be shocked by who he saw standing behind his friend.

Seeing Nino's jaw dropped, Jun followed his direction and turned to Ohno, but was equally surprised and speechless.

“How did you – ?”

“Where did you -- ?”

Nino went up to Ohno and grabbed his arm, took him to the sofa and pushed him to sit down. Ohno tried to get up but was pushed back down.

“So you knew all along, didn’t you? You made us worried and come up with all these stupid plans, but you knew all along that Sho-kun is in Osaka!” Nino was thinking like his usual bratty self.

“What?! No, how could I know?” Ohno defended himself.

“No wonder why Sho-kun didn’t show up at Sakurano Palace Park and you left us without a word. You two must have met up behind our backs and made us looking all over for you!” Jun recalled what happened on the first day of the festival and joined Nino with the accusations.

“Don’t deny it, Ohno-san. You were gone the whole day and night yesterday and came back together with Sho-kun. What other explanations can there be?” The more Nino thought about what happened these couple of days, the more he’s sure he was right. “You’d better buy a new phone for me.”

“Satoshi didn’t know I was here.” Sho spoke up in Ohno’s defense and walked over to Nino. “Unless you’ve told him about it.”

“Of course I didn’t tell him. I wouldn’t break my promise to you. If he didn’t know beforehand, how come you come back with him? Don’t tell me you just happened to meet him. It’s impossible in these big crowds of people out there.” Nino was still skeptical.

“We just happened to meet each other in the festival. Believe it or not.” Ohno stood up and went beside Sho taking the man’s hand.

“Ah, so I see that you two have reconciled.” Jun saw the two men’s gesture and figured they didn’t need anymore mediation.

Ohno looked at Sho and smiled. “Spending some time together made us realized how much we missed each other. Last night was really special – ”

“No need for details please – ” Nino covered his ears with his hands.

“Nino!” Sho smacked his bratty friend. It was a relaxed and carefree ambience that Sho had not been in for a long time.

“What I wanted to say was, Sho had agreed to go back to Tokyo with me and we’ll try to work things out.”

“That’s great! I’m sure Obasan will be happy to see you.” Jun was happy that their Osaka trip was fruitful after all.

As expected, Ohno’s mother was happy to see that Sho came back and be with her son. She assured the young man that their home is his home and he’s always welcomed there. Sho felt so much warmth around her. He thanked her for her kindness, but knew very well that there’s one person in the Ohno household that wasn’t that welcoming.

Ohno’s mother returned to Tokyo that day with Nino and Jun. Ohno stayed behind with Sho since Sho still had things to take care of before he could leave Osaka. They promised to return to Tokyo in a few days. In the meantime Nino would talk to the university administration and filled out any paperwork needed to get Sho’s admission reinstated.

Sho’s place in Osaka was no bigger than the little apartment he had back in Tokyo. He worked two jobs while saving money in hope of going back to school someday. He asked Ohno to live in hotel since his place was too small for two people, even for a few days. But Ohno insisted to stay with Sho.

“I guess you’ll have to sleep on the floor then. I told you to stay in hotel, but you wouldn’t listen.” Sho showed Ohno his apartment after they checked out the hotel. “I don’t even have a couch long enough for you to lie down on.”

“I can sleep on the bed with you.” Ohno smirked trying to kiss the younger man.

“Be serious, Satoshi.” Sho turned his head away to avoid the kiss. “How can the single bed fit the two of us? And I’m not sleeping on the floor since it’s my bed.”

“Let’s try it. I say it fits us perfectly.” Ohno then pushed Sho gently towards the bed. Sho tried to get away but couldn’t. When they were at the edge of the bed, Ohno gave a final push and both men fell on it.

“Satoshi, get off me.” Sho was underneath Ohno when they fell on the bed.

“See, we can both sleep on it.” He moved up the bed still holding on to Sho so their whole bodies were on the bed. “I missed holding you like that.”

The gentle tone of Ohno softened Sho. He stopped struggling and returned the embrace instead. “Me too -- me too.”

They lost track of how long they were in the same position. They just knew they both missed the warmth, the scents and the peacefulness they felt when they’re in each others arms, especially lying together comfortably. So much so that they dozed off without knowing it, partly to blame for spending the night under the tree the night before.

“Good morning – ” Ohno greeted the just awaken Sho with a kiss.

Sho chuckled. “I guess the sun is lazier than we are if it’s morning.” Only darkness could be seen from the window. They must have took a long nap till evening.

“Are you hungry? I can go make something.” Sho asked thinking it must be way past dinner time.

“Wait, Sho. I want to lie here for a little while longer.”

Sho didn’t move and remained in Ohno’s arms. A couple of days ago he was still all alone in Osaka, feeling emptiness inside out. Everytime he thought of Ohno his heart ached. Now he’s in the arms of the man he loves. At this moment he truly believed the saying that when you’re with the person you love, the world just disappeared around you and nothing else matters.

“You know, Sho, in the past months, for the first time in my life, I felt lost.”

The solemnness in Ohno’s tone of voice surprised Sho. He couldn’t find any good way to respond. To make a person who had almost no worries in his entire life to feel lost and depressed, he knew he was part of the blame if not entirely so.

“Since I was little, I got pretty much everything I wanted without much effort, and I can solve any problem I run into with money. My family has lots of it, so there should not be anything that I couldn’t have. When you pushed me away that night, I was so angry. I couldn’t stand being rejected, especially by someone I thought who loved me the most. I kept telling myself I didn’t want you, I can be perfectly fine without you. But I was wrong, very wrong. The more I kid myself, the more dejected and miserable I became.”

“Satoshi, I never – ”

“Let me finish, please.” Ohno interrupted Sho, then placed a gentle kiss on Sho’s forehead before continuing. “I tried to go back to my old life, partying day and night, pretending that everything was the way it was before. But it’s no use. Something is missing in my life. The one thing, one person I wanted the most but I couldn’t have, despite having lots of money. I finally realized life is not always as simple and favorably as I had thought. It scared me. I lost confidence in what I do, lost confidence in myself. I don’t know what I want to do, what I could do with my life.”

There was a moment of silence followed. Sho never expected this out of Ohno. He had been on his own for years and learned at young age that nothing comes easy. This had made him strong, stronger than most people at his age. After leaving Ohno, he was lonely, empty and sad, but he never felt lost. He knew very well what he wanted to do with his life, whether or not he could do it. He always thought Ohno had a perfect life, loving parents, no worries about money and a bright future.

“I’m sorry, Satoshi, I didn’t mean to hurt you like this.” Sho didn’t know his rejection affected Ohno to that extend.

“No, Sho, don’t be sorry. I was hurt, but I also learned a valuable lesson. I won’t take anything for granted anymore. I have to work hard to earn what I want and I know what they are now. I want to be with you. I want to be an art teacher. I will work very hard and do everything I can to get them.” Ohno pulled away from Sho and looked at him straight in the eyes. “Thank you. Thank you for helping me realized I was so naïve before. Thank you for giving me a second chance.”

Sho could feel his eyes tearing up. Even with all the misfortunes in his life, he could still meet the person that made him felt so loved and wanted. He had no more regrets and complaints.

Ohno saw the tears in Sho’s eyes. He didn’t mean to make Sho cried and wanted to lighten up the mood.

“You asked if I am hungry. Now I am.” Ohno said playfully.

Sho wiped the moisture at the corner of his eyes and said, “What do you want to eat? I don’t have much ingredients here. May be ramen?”

Ohno moved his mouth next to Sho’s ears and whispered, “I want you.”

Sho blushed immediately and gave Ohno a hard push. “You’re sleeping on the floor tonight!”

Sho quit his two jobs the next day, but promised his bosses that he would stay on until they found replacements. He also gave notice to terminate the lease of his apartment. When Sho was not working, they would take long walks along side the river banks, talking about anything that came to mind, their childhood, their future. Sho didn't feel ashame of talking about his past life anymore. Both of them admitted their behavior was somewhat immature but also thought that they had learned something out of it, and grateful to have a second chance to be together.

A week later, they were on their way back to Tokyo.

“Are you OK, Sho? You seem a little tense today. Are you having second thoughts about going back with me?” Ohno asked Sho when they were on the plane waiting for take off.

“No, Satoshi. I want to be with you more than anything. It’s just – I’m a little nervous.”

“Nervous about what? Mama, Nino and Jun are all waiting for you. Even Nishimura missed you very much.”

“I’m not so sure about Mr. Ohno though. I feel so exposed in front of him, like he’s always judging me no matter what I do.” Sho revealed his worries to Ohno.

“Don’t worry. I’m sure mama has already talked to him about your return and about us. Mama has pretty good lobbying skills, you know.” Ohno tried to console the worried man. He actually believed in what he said.

“I hope so – ”
