Chapter 2

His alarm clock rang at the usual time, 7:00am, and he turned it off like he usually does and continued to sleep. Just as he was about to fall back asleep, he jerked awake to the sound of his mother’s pounding on his bedroom door.

“Satoshi, you’re going to be late for school if you don’t get up right now.” Ohno’s mother shouted from outside.

Ohno wanted to respond, but his mouth went dry and his throat closed uncomfortably, stopping a sob he hadn’t expected in his throat. He closed his eyes tight and brought his hands up to cover his face. He wasn’t sure that he was ready to face school yet. When he tried to imagine walking the halls that Sho would never walk again, the beautiful piano piece played by Sho would never be heard again, there won’t be a familiar figure waiting for him at the park, he couldn’t bring himself to face all these, not yet. The pain was still too fresh.

Suddenly he realized something, he slowly pulled his hands from his face and opened his eyes.

“How come – ” He sat up and stared down at his hands, uninjured and perfectly clean. The last time he saw them one was wrapped in bandage with blood stains still visible and they had both been covered in dirt from pounding on Sho’s grave. He closed his eyes again, furrowing his brow and trying to remember what had happened after he had gone to the cemetery.

“If you were given another chance to do it all over, would you?”

He tried to remember it all, "Three days…” He whispered to himself, then everything seemed to be coming back. “Mama!"

He was out of his bed and out of the room in an instant. He went straight to the kitchen where his mother was making breakfast, like she always does every morning. She’s pouring milk into the pot of oatmeal she’s cooking. His sister was sitting at the small round table drinking her orange juice. Everything looks so – normal.

“Mama, what day is today?” Ohno asked anxiously as he crossed the room to her.

“Oh Satoshi, you’re finally up. Sit down, breakfast will be ready in a minute.” His mother continued with her cooking.

Ohno went up to her, put his hands on her shoulder and turned her around to face him. His mother exclaimed in surprise. She looked scared for only an instant before an expression of realization crossed her face and then morphed into an expression of concern. She set a hand to his forehead.

"Satoshi, are you feeling alright? You don’t seem to have a fever. Should you skip school and stay home today?”

“I’m not sick, I just need to know what day is today!” He demanded. “Just tell me please.”

“Sato, it’s Friday.” Masa jumped in. She called him Sato as a nickname since they were little.

Ohno just looked at his sister, still in question.

“Friday the 15th.” She elaborated. “And next time, wear some pants before coming out.”

He looked down and realized he was only in his boxers. But he couldn’t care less.

“15th?! Yes! It worked! I have all the time in the world! Yes! Yes! Yes!” He couldn’t help but jumped up and punched the air.

“You’re the best sister!” He gave his sister a quick hug, and then whirled his mother, “And you’re the best mother ever!” He picked her up in a hug and spun her around before setting her down and turning to dash back to his room.

“Satoshi!” His mother called after him.

“I know!” He called back from the hall, “We have to talk. And we will, Mama, I promise! But not right now! I gotta go!”

He took only five minutes to change. He didn’t even notice he’s wearing his best shirt until he passed by the mirror on his way out. The blue shirt was a gift that Sho had given him a month before without giving any reason. But he’d never worn it, and Sho never asked him why. Now that he thought about it, Sho had always been doing things like that. Buying him little things, making him bento for lunches which he secretly put in his gym bag, even went to his home to take care of him when he got sick and missed school. Sho had tried to express love in so many different ways and Ohno had chosen to ignore every single one. Yet Sho had never said anything and Ohno knew he wouldn’t.

Ohno stood at the corner where Sho was hit and he froze. The final image of Sho’s life flashed before his eyes.

“Love…you…”

Ohno’s heart clenched and the pain that shot through him was so bad it was almost physical, made him gag. It wouldn’t happen, not again. He wouldn’t let it. Tears flowing in his eyes, he swore that no matter what happened, it would change. And he would start by changing himself and making Sho happy. When Monday came Sho would not be anywhere near that corner of the street. He felt better now that he knew exactly what he had to do. He wiped his tears and continued walking towards the school entrance. He looked around as he walked trying to catch a glimpse of the younger boy. It wasn’t real until he could see Sho for himself. He froze again when he spotted him. He was neatly dressed, casual but neat, as he always was. He wasn’t covered in blood, wasn’t pale, and most of all, wasn’t dying. He was very much alive!

Ohno followed Sho into the school building. He stood at the hallway and looked, could do nothing but looked. Sho was at his locker, smiling and talking with his music club friend. The slim face was never more handsome. All Ohno could think of was wrapping Sho in his arms and kissed the sense out of him. And why shouldn’t he? Why would it matter what anyone else thought? Why shouldn’t he just stride right over there and –

He had almost made the decision to take action when he saw Eros, the girl in the cemetery from the night before, at the end of the hallway. He panicked for a moment and quickly went towards her and followed her out of the building.

“Why are you here?” Ohno asked anxiously. “Please don’t tell me you’re taking back your words.” He couldn’t bear the thought that his chance to save Sho would be taken away before he could do anything.

“No, I’m not taking back my words. Otherwise you wouldn’t be waking up to a Friday, would you?” Eros said earnestly. “I’m here to help you. How would hugging and kissing Sakurai in public help with anything?” Eros questioned while taking a step closer to Ohno and looking at him straight in the eyes.

Ohno felt the intimidation. Eros seemed able to read Ohno’s mind, knowing what he wanted to do earlier. “I wanted to tell Sho-kun that I – ” He looked away, avoiding Eros’s stares.

“— love him, care about him. I get that. But this is not the way. Though he likes you, jumping on him like that will just scare him off and very likely create more excuses for those bullies to torture him even more. It certainly wouldn’t stop him from being pushed to his death.” Eros cut him off in a harsh tone.

“But at least – wait – ” His mind finally caught up with what Eros said and he stumbled and had to catch himself on the edge of a bench, “What did you just say?” His knees went weak and wouldn’t support him anymore. He sat down at the bench and covered his face with his hands before scraping them over his hair. His voice came out in a whisper, "Sho-kun was pushed?”

“Yes,” Eros sighed. “They pushed him around, as usual. Then one of them gave him a really hard push, he lost footing and fell on the road when a car drove by – ”

“That’s murder!” Ohno was glad that anger came and he had the energy to push himself to his feet. He walked around, trying to work through the rage that was working its way through him, making it difficult to stay still, “He never hurt anyone! He’d never even hurt a fly! He – He’s so kind and good and someone just snatched his life away like it was nothing! Why? Throwing him into dumpsters, giving him cuts and bruises is not enough? He’s the best person I’ve ever met!” He turned and punched the painted brick wall, glad for the pain that shot up his arms as his knuckles split. He punched again and again until the hurt turned into numbness. Only then did he realize that warm, angry tears were making their way down his face. He wiped them away with a quick, angry jerk and set his head against the cool wall for a moment. He slid to his knees, then turned to lean his back against the wall.

“I understand, Ohno.” Eros said quietly. Ohno opened his eyes and saw Eros still standing right there. He had almost thought she would be gone. “You never looked happier when you saw him alive just now. You fell apart after he died. It took four people to drag you away from him when the paramedics wanted to put him in the body bag. You looked like hell at the funeral. You hadn’t eaten since that day. Everyone just figured it was guilt or something since you deserved to be guilty. You grouped with those jerks who bullied him and even helped out once or twice. But – it’s more than guilt, isn’t it? You wouldn’t cry for him if it was only guilt. You love him, don’t you?”

Ohno didn’t respond right away, not sure if he would agree or deny purely on instinct if he tried to speak. He hated himself for lacking the courage to admit it even then. But if he wanted to eventually able to tell his true feelings to Sho, he had to find the courage somehow. Saying it to Eros may be a good way to start. When he finally found his voice, he said quietly. “He was the only person who’d talk to me when I first came here. We became very good – friends, but I didn’t think it was more than that until I was holding his hand when he was dying.” Not in so many words, but at least he’s admitting that Sho was special to him.

Eros was frustrated about his hesitance and shoved it in his face. "And now what are you going to do?" She scoffed, "Hold Sakurai’s hand in the hallways? Be the perfect boyfriend?"

“I don’t know, but I’m going to do whatever it takes to make him happy.” Ohno said quietly, knowing every word was true, hoping he had the strength to follow through on them, “I’ll protect him, from bullies, from sadness, from being hurt. I watched him died. I felt his body went cold. Nothing could compare to that pain. I can’t go through that again. He deserves to live and be happy. I’ll do everything I can to make sure of that.”

“So...you admit he’s important to you now?” Eros asked slowly.

“Yes,” Ohno took a deep breath, “He is important to me.”

“Good.” Eros finally smiled. “That’s what I wanted to hear. You might actually be able to pull this off! I’ll help you as much as I can. The first thing I can tell you is not to run up and freak out on him. Remember, he doesn't know he died or will die. No one remembers that except you and me. You have to change things gradually or you might scare him off and make things worse. You have three days to change things around and make him happy, if that’s what you put your mind into doing. Three days. Got that?”

Ohno nodded. He’s going to need all the help he could get if he’s going to pull this off.

“You should probably take care of your wounded hand.”

Ohno heard Eros said to him, but when he looked up, she was gone, disappeared. He slowly got up, trying to gather his thoughts while walking towards the school nurse’s station.

So much had happened. Trying to save Sho’s life, trying to find a way to tell Sho how he felt about him…taking advice from a mysterious girl who seemed to have supernatural power to rewind time or something… Ohno wondered just when did his life become so complicated and why he had let it. He saw Sho, walking toward him and felt his heart clenched when the image of Sho’s smiling, happy, alive face was overlaid by the slack, bloody and lifeless one. That’s the reason why he allowed his life to remain complicated, he knew, to keep that smile on Sho’s face, to keep him alive. Sho was what’s important now and he had a mission to accomplish. Ohno walked to the nurse's office with a smile on his face.

:D It's wonderful that Ohno is given another chance, I was most surprised that what happened to Sho wasn't merely an accident; but I wonder if the bullies were truly aiming to kill Sho or was it just a joke that turned ugly?

If it was the former, how to make sure that Sho will truly be safe from harm even if he did not end up dying on the road that very day?

I'm looking forward to see how the situation will unravel.

*hugs* thanks for sharing the story :D
