Chapter 3

A little kid sees his favorite toy all day long, but is not allowed to touch or play with it. That’s the feeling Ohno had looking at Sho in classes, in the hallway and everywhere else in school. Of course he didn’t see Sho as his toy. He wanted to take Sho into his embrace, kiss and love the man with all his heart and soul and treasure him for life. Why did it take Sho’s death to make him realized his own feelings? He laughed at himself for being so dumb. Thank goodness he’s given a second chance.

Take it slow. Ohno made these three words his mantra throughout the very long day. He still couldn’t help glancing at the younger boy, casually bumped his shoulders as he passed by and turned around with a smile. He didn’t hang out with the others like before. Instead he followed Sho from a distant and tried to get him away from the bullies’ way when he smelt trouble.

Yet he’s still struggling. He had vowed to stand up for Sho, protect him from any kind of harm the best he could. But when the time comes for him to live up to his words, he retreated. Seeing the bullies shoved Sho to the lockers, literally took his music scores out of his hands and ripped them apart before throwing the paper strips back at him, Ohno still didn’t have the guts to confront them and stopped the incident. He just watched at the far end of the hallway and felt terrible after.

“Sho-kun – ” Ohno greeted Sho when the younger boy approached the park where they usually met. He resent his own cowardice and decided to do something to cheer Sho up.

“Satoshi-kun, you’re early.” Sho was surprised to see Ohno waiting for him. He was the one who usually got there first because Ohno had to hang out with his buddies after school. There were several times Ohno didn’t show up at all and Sho ended up walking home alone after waiting for a couple of hours.

“Well, yeah – ” Ohno couldn’t think of a good excuse. He’d rather not be too straight forward to tell Sho that he wanted to see him sooner. That’s not the normal Ohno. “Here – ”

Sho took the bag that Ohno handed to him. It was a sandwich and an apple. “What is this?”

“I know you help Hatori-sensei in the lab at lunch time every Friday and you had to skip lunch. I thought you might be hungry.” Ohno was not used to saying those attentive words to Sho. He tried to hide his awkward feelings by putting his hands at the back of his head.

The somewhat shocking and unsure look on Sho’s face followed by a cautiously pleased grin as he took the first bite at the sandwich was enough to assure Ohno he’s on the right track. The two didn’t talk and just walked together slowly together on the familiar path for the past year, but it was the first time Ohno felt really relaxed and the footsteps seemed so much lighter.

“Sho – about your music scores – ” Ohno still felt bad about what he didn’t do.

“Don’t worry.” Sho finished the sandwich and wiped his mouth. “I have another copy. This has been happening too many times, so I am prepared.” Sho smiled. “And you bought me a sandwich. It made up for any displeasure today.”

It made Ohno’s heart ached to hear Sho said that. He felt ashamed of himself for not protecting Sho all these time when he should.

“Satoshi-kun, will you come to see my solo performance on Monday?” Sho asked just as they were in front of Sho’s home.

Monday –

The mention of Monday made Ohno shivered. He would not let anything happened to Sho on that day. He promised himself. “Sure, I’ll be there to cheer for you.”

The same big grin appeared on Sho’s face and he headed towards the door.

“How about I come by on Monday morning and we walk to school together?” Ohno shouted out before Sho went inside.

Sho was surprised and skeptical. He knew very well how much Ohno hated for them to be seen together at school. “But – ”

“I’ll be here by 7.” Ohno turned around and left without waiting for Sho’s response. But he’s sure that the younger boy would be thrilled, which he was, very much so.

The day had gone well for Ohno, too well that he got a little carried away. He sat at the dinner table trying to concentrate on his Geometry homework. But his thoughts on Sho’s beautiful smile and pleasantly surprised look made him giggled and jiggled his leg and tapped his pencil which were already enough to get his mother’s attention.

“What’s wrong, Satoshi?”

“What – ” His voice came out too high and he cleared his throat before trying again, “Why does anything have to be wrong?”

“Satoshi,” She said half-laughed, “You’re my son and I know you. You usually doze off in less than ten minutes every time you do your homework, but not only that you do your homework on a Friday night, you’re been sitting here for half an hour without falling asleep, and giggling every now and then. Something’s up.” She sat down opposite to him at the table.

Ohno looked down at his hands which had become sweaty. He had never been so nervous in front of his mother before.

“Satoshi,” His mother reached out and took one of her son’s hand. “What is it, son? You know nothing you say could ever make me love you any less.”

“Mama, I – I am in love.” Ohno continued to look down, but he felt his face heating up.

“Oh,” She sounded a little surprised but was relieved that it wasn’t something bad. “Are you sure?”

He nodded. “I think so.” He finally looked up and saw a very gentle smile.

“Then, it’s a good thing. I’m happy for you.” Her voice was so honest. “What’s her name? You should invite her over for dinner sometime.”

“Sho. His name is Sho. He had been here before. You were just at work when he came.” Ohno looked down again. He didn’t want to see when his mother's eyes changed from love to disgust. The last thing he wanted was to break her heart.

“His name? Satoshi, did you say – his?”

He looked up and saw her face turned pale. Her hand that was on his had gone slack. He could feel tears started to fill his eyes. The room was dead silence.

“Mama, I’m in love with a guy.” Ohno forced out the next words, his voice came out pleading. “I'm so sorry if I disappointed you. Please say something. Tell me I disgust you. Scold me. Kick me out. Just say something, please.”

“Just – be quiet. I need a moment.” Ohno’s mother said quietly.

“OK,” he whispered. He went to the kitchen and poured himself a glass of water. He didn’t know what prompted him to have the impulse of spitting this out to his mother tonight. But he was given a second chance for a reason. He had to make things right, not only for Sho but to himself as well. Being honest to his mother about his real feelings was another way of being honest to himself. He had no idea what he’d do if his mother kicked him out, but what worried him more was his mother wouldn’t love him anymore.

“This is going to be hard for me.” She finally spoke up. “I’m not going to be able to take it all in at once, but you’re my son and I love you no matter what. I will not kick you out. You will not disgust me or disappoint me by simply being yourself and following your heart. You remember that.”

Ohno went back to the dinner table and sat down besides his mother, pulling her into a hug. She held onto him tightly. This big and strong young man is still her little boy, who desperately needed her love and understanding.

“Does he make you happy?” She released the embrace and looked at her son who had let tears fell down his cheeks.

Ohno nodded. “He is a very nice person. I’m sure you’ll like him.”

“I can’t say that I want to meet him right away. I will need some time to process. When I’m ready, I’d love to meet him.”

“Thank you, Mama. I love you.” Ohno hadn’t said ‘I love you’ that to anyone since his father left them. He suddenly felt it’s not so hard to say them again, as long as he’s saying that to the right persons.

“You seem to be on the right track,” Eros voice was heard when Ohno was lying in bed later in the night recalling what happened during the day.

“You scared me.” Ohno jumped a bit on the sudden appearance of the uninvited guest. “Look, you might have mighty power but it’s still not nice to come into one’s bedroom out of the blue. What if I’m naked?”

Eros laughed. “How did you know I was not here when you were?”

Ohno blushed picturing what Eros just said. “That’s not funny.” He turned away from her and faced the wall.

“You said you’d make him happy and he had been smiling today.” Eros returned to the main subject. “It’s not easy to make him smile around this time of year.”

“This time of year?” Ohno turned around to Eros again. “What’s with this time of year?”

“You didn’t know, did you? You really didn’t listen.” Eros sighed.

“I – ” Ohno swallowed around the guilt that was in his throat.

“This Sunday is the anniversary of his mom's death.” Eros said taking a glance at Ohno who dropped his head into his hands.

“I should have listened to him more, cared for him more. I’m such an idiot.”

Eros patted Ohno on the shoulder. “Just do what you promised to do, while you still have time.” Her tone softened.
