Five dollars and thirty cents. Sho counted it over and over again, but that’s how much he had saved for three months, ten cents here, twenty cents there. But the amount was no where enough to buy what he had wanted to buy.

What should I do? There’s only two days left.

He slowly opened an old wooden box which he kept all his belongings and took out a little rectangular box that was nicely wrapped in a white handkerchief. He carefully unwrapped the box, opened it and looked at the inside. After starring whatever’s inside for a while, he bite his lower lips and nodded his head, as if he had just made a big decision.

At the opposite end of the big mansion where he and Sho both worked, Ohno was also looking at the money he had in his spleuchan. His look was a disappointed one as well. He gave a big sigh and put the spleuchan back under his bed.

I must think of something.

Both Sho and Ohno had been working as servant boys for this rich family for almost five years, since they were still teenagers. They both came from poor families and had to work to support younger siblings. Coming from similar background and going through same hardships had drawn them close to each other. They found comfort from each other by talking at night after a full day of hard work or after harsh punishments from their master upon making small mistakes. Soon their closeness had grown beyond friendship.

“Someday, Satoshi, someday we will get out of here and make a better life for ourselves” Sho would say that every time they were sitting side by side holding their hands tight together at the porch outside their servant room. Sho would lean his head on Ohno’s shoulder, close his eyes and imagine their future.

“We will.” Ohno usually replied in few words, but that’s already enough reassurance for Sho.

The young adults do have their dreams. Ohno wanted to be an artist. He liked to draw since he was little and is good at it. He won a very nice drawing book in a school competition when his family could still afford to send him to elementary school. He has yet to draw anything on it because he did not have money to buy proper drawing pencils. Sho loved to read and write and wanted to be a writer someday. Though he only had middle school education, he always read on his own. He would sneak into the library of his master and read the books there even though he was forbidden to. Several times he got caught in the library and was punished by having his meals privileges taken away. Ohno would then secretly shared the little food he had with the hungry Sho.

This is the day that both young men always remembered and celebrated whatever way they can – the day that they first met. This day was special to them because knowing each other and having each other’s company and support was what got them through the hard times all these years. They would not imagine a future without each other. The day this year was particularly special because it was their fifth anniversary.

After a full day of tiring work, they were finally on their free time. They met at the porch as usual, but this time each had a small package with them. They greeted each other with a gentle kiss before sitting down on the cold stony steps.

“Happy anniversary” They almost said at the same time, each handing the small packages to the other with big innocent smiles on their faces.

“This time you open first” Ohno beat Sho in saying that.

“OK” Sho agreed, “I’m sure I’ll like it.”

They treated each other’s gifts as treasure even if it’s just a small drawing Ohno made for Sho or a small poem Sho wrote for Ohno. With little spare money that they had, they couldn’t afford any big gifts, except for today.

Sho carefully opened the package he got from Ohno. It was a small bottle of pen ink nicely packed in the box.

“Now you can have ink to use with the fountain pen your grandpapa left you to write your novel,” Ohno knew that Sho had always wanted to write with the only thing his grandfather gave him before he passed, but pen ink was too expensive for him. He thought this would be the perfect gift for Sho in this special day.

Sho starred at the bottle for a while without saying anything. The expression on his face was more puzzled than excited, not exactly the reaction that Ohno had expected.

“You don’t like it?” Ohno was a little disappointed at Sho’s reaction, or lack thereof.

Sho could sense Ohno’s disappointing tone. He quickly shook his head a few times to make sure Ohno didn’t misunderstand what he’s feeling.

“Of course I love it, Satoshi. Thank you” Sho further showed his appreciation by putting a kiss on Ohno’s cheek. “Now it’s your turn.”

Having received the reassuring kiss from Sho, Ohno split his lips with a smile and went on to open the package from Sho. To his surprise, he found a set of drawing pencils in the box, one that he had always wanted but couldn’t afford. He starred at the pencils for a while and didn’t know what to say.

“I am looking forward to see all the beautiful drawings you make with these pencils on you drawing book.” Sho said wholeheartedly. He would do anything to help Ohno to fulfill his dream.

“Thank you, Sho. It’s very thoughtful of you.” Ohno tried to squeeze out a smile but not very successful. He covered his awkward expression by taking Sho’s hand to his lips and kiss it gently.

“Sho, how can you afford to buy the drawing pencils?” Ohno suddenly asked without releasing Sho’s hand.

“Mmm…” Sho lowered his head trying to avoid seeing Ohno’s demanding look.

Seeing Sho’s aversion to answer his question, he became more puzzled. “I know you don’t have that kind of money to spare. Please tell me or I won’t take it.”

Sho knew he couldn’t get away with not answering, so he said reluctantly “I – I sold the fountain pen…”

“You did what? But that’s what your grandfather left you…”

“I know, but since I had no use to it, I thought I’d use its value to get something for someone special to me.”

Upon hearing the sweet confession from Sho, Ohno could say nothing further. But he realized that the pen ink he bought Sho would be useless then.

Sho thought of the ink too, and the same question came to his mind. “Satoshi, where did you get the money to buy the ink?”

Ohno gave our an unintended chuckle. “You see, my dear Sho, I think we do think alike.”

“What do you mean?” Sho sometimes found it hard to understand the implicit meaning of Ohno's saying.

“We both wanted to give something special to each other, but we both don't have money.” Ohno explained. “Then we both did the same thing to make it happen...”

“Same thing? Oh! Satoshi, don't tell me you also....” A thought came to his mind that made his stomach turned.

Ohno nodded. “Sorry Sho, I won't be able to use the drawing pencils any time soon, you have wasted your precious fountain pen for nothing.”

Sho looked at Ohno and wrapped his arms around him. “I'm sorry too, I did the same to you.”

Ohno returned the embrace. With his chin resting on Sho's shoulder, he sighed. “Now we just have to find out what we can do with a bottle of ink with some drawing pencils.”

Both men burst into laughter, with their arms holding tight onto each other.

Their gifts might turned out to be useless, but they knew that it's the thought that counts and felt their love is stronger than ever. No matter what hard times they needed to face in the future, they would have each other by their sides.

// The End

I loved Ohno's last line very much. Sounds like a call for Yama collaboration with art supplies XD
