Chapter 4

Ohno used to wait eagerly all week for a Saturday to come when he didn’t need to go to school. But this time he put a pillow over his face and screamed into it in frustr
ation because he realized this meant he would have to spend away from Sho completely.

Would Sho be awake yet? He smiled to himself thinking about the younger boy. When he forced himself out of bed at nine o’clock, he thought both his mother and sister who weren’t home would be shocked to see him up before noon on a weekend. There’s really no reason for him to be up early on non-school days. He didn’t have many friends, real friends. The buddies he had at school didn’t do anything meaningful and it never occurred to him to hang out with Sho outside of school before. He fixed himself a quick breakfast and decided to find something to do to get his mind off of the younger boy.

The sun slanting in the window illuminated the dust on the tables and shelves. He had never noticed just how quickly the apartment could get dusty. He didn't allow himself to really think about what he was doing before he grabbed the rag and lemon oil his mother kept under the sink. Soon he found out the apartment was not big. It took him just a couple of hours and it’s not even noon yet before he had the living room, kitchen and bathroom sparkling clean. He turned to his room and shrugged. He had wanted to reorganize his room for a long time and may as well do it on this clean up day.

Should I put the desk by the bed or by the window? Sho is such an organized and efficient person. What would he do? He moved things around this way and that way but couldn’t decide which is better. Finally he settled in having the desk by the window so he could utilize more natural light while doing his homework. He took a picture of the new setting with his phone and planned to show it to Sho later. He also cleaned up his closet ended up with bags of old clothes for donation. He also put some dirty clothes in the washer machine before he finally sat down and rest.

He was quite satisfied with what he had accomplished on these few hours of a Saturday morning. But when he slowed down a bit, his mind was back to thinking about Sho. Damn it!

Call him? A phone call couldn't hurt, he thought. In fact, it would probably be a good step to showing Sho he cared. He just had to keep his mind focused. They had exchanged numbers but never actually called each other. It’s time for him to make the first call. He got comfortable on his freshly made bed and looked Sho up in his phone contact list, pausing only a moment to take a deep breath before hitting the call button. His heart beats faster as Sho picked up on the third ring.

“Satoshi-kun?” Sho sounded surprised.

“Hi,” Ohno let out the breath he hadn't even realized he'd been holding, “Did – did I call at a bad time?”

“No,” Sho sounded equally nervous. “I was just finishing the dishes from lunch and about to help my father with some paper work.” He paused for a moment, then finally asked the question Ohno had been waiting for. “Why are you calling?”

Ohno decided to be honest. “Nothing in particular. I just want to hear your voice.”

“Oh – ” Sho didn’t know how to response. This was probably the most affectionate words Ohno had ever said to him, and he liked hearing them.

“Sho-kun, are you still there?” After a long moment of silence, Ohno was afraid that his straight forward had scared Sho off.

“Yes, I’m still here.” Sho said softly, so soft that Ohno could barely hear him. “Satoshi-kun, why do you want to hear my voice all of a sudden?” He had to ask.

“Look, I know I hadn’t been a very caring – friend, and I’m sorry for that.” Even though Eros had warned Ohno to take things slow with Sho, but since the younger boy asked, he saw it as the perfect opportunity to spill his heart out. “But I want to change that. I want us to be more than friends.”

“What do you mean – more than friends?” Sho asked cautiously.

“Sho-kun, I like you. I want us to be – boyfriends.” Ohno finally said it.

Another moment of silence on the other side of the phone.

“Sho?” Ohno asked warily, crossing his fingers and hoping for the best.

“I like it, a lot. But – ” Sho finally spoke. “I’m scared I like it too much, Satoshi-kun. Two days ago, you turned your back on me when one of your buddies at school almost saw us walking home together. Today you called me and said you want to be my boyfriend. I can’t be your boyfriend only at your convenience. I can’t let you break my heart.” Sho sounded so scared and dejected.

Ohno took a deep breath. He hadn’t expected to have this conversation so soon. He didn’t know how to approach it. Too much, too little, too fast, too slow, and he would lose Sho for good. All of the possibilities were starting to make his head spin.

“Sho-kun, I don’t want to hurt you, and I’m not planning to. I – May be I never thought anything between us is possible, but now – ” He suddenly had an inspiration, “How about a picnic?”

“What?” Ohno could hear Sho’s disbelief over the phone.

“A picnic, just you and me, tomorrow around noon. I’ll prepare everything and pick you up. We can talk about this and whatever else you want to talk about. I just don’t feel like we should do it over the phone. What do you think?”

“Tomorrow – OK – ” Sho was a little hesitant at first, but eventually agreed.

Ohno didn’t remember the next day had special meaning for Sho according to Eros until he made the suggestion, but was glad that Sho accepted the invitation. He hoped to show Sho his sincerity in making his confession on this special day and at the same time giving the younger boy some comfort that he thought he needed.

“Great! It’s a date!”

*********************************

Having a date with Sho! That’s something never occurred to Ohno before. The next morning he woke up even earlier than the day before and asked his mother’s help to prepare for the picnic. His mother didn’t ask a single question but already had a pretty good idea who her son was going with on the picnic.

Looks like Satoshi is really happy with this Sho. Blah, blah, blah, guy or gal, why does it matter? Ohno’s mother smiled while gathered the food and utensils into the picnic basket.

“Here you go.” His mother handed the basket over to her son. “May be you can invite him for dinner over sometime.”

“Thank you Mama.” Ohno gave his mother a big hug before headed out.

He realized his palms were sweating when he stood at the front door of Sho’s home. He had passed by this place numerous times, but never considered went in for a visit. Sho’s only family was his father, a guy who raised his son on his own since his wife died when Sho was little. Sho and his father were close. He came to every single one of Sho’s piano performances. Even though Sho tried to hide his bruises and cuts from him, he still came to complain to the principle several times about the bullying of his son. Ohno could see he loved his son very much. That’s what a father should be. Sometimes he wished his own father who bailed out on his family had been like Sho’s father. Now that his mother had accepted Sho, he hoped Sho’s father would also be that open minded and understanding.

“Hey,” Sho opened the door before Ohno rang the door bell. “Umm, I’ve been waiting for you.”

“I’m not late, am I?” Ohno took out his phone to check the time. It’s only 11:45am, fifteen minutes before the time they agreed on.

“No, you’re not. I’m just – a little anxious. That’s all.” Sho said shyly. “Do you want to come in first?”

“I got everything. We can go now if you’re ready.” Ohno was not ready to meet Sho’s father just yet.

“Yes, I am. I’ve been ready since – never mind. I’ll go get my coat.”

Sho came back in less than a minuite with his coat in one hand and a small bag in the other. Ohno wondered what’s in the bag since he said he was going to bring everything. Sho, seemed to read Ohno’s mind, said before the older boy even asked. “I brought us some fruits.”

“Oh, right, fruits. I forgot – ” Ohno scratched his head to cover his embarrassment. He knew Sho loved fruits but didn’t bring any.”

“That’s alright. You don’t seem to eat a lot of fruits, so I figured you won’t bring any. They are good for you, you know.” Sho locked the door behind him and turned around to Ohno again. “So, where are we going?”

“It’s a secret. You’ll know soon.” Ohno led the way and Sho followed. They didn’t talk much during the walk. Both were nervous, knowing what they were going to talk about during the picnic.

Soon they arrived at a small park behind a forest of trees at the opposite side of town from their school. Ohno seemed to know this place well. They stopped near a tree which overlooked the small pond where ducks and geese made their summer homes and Ohno spread the picnic blanket on the grass and started taking things out from the basket.

“I’ve never been to this park.” Sho said quietly as he sat on the blanket and looked towards the pond. “It’s so beautiful and peaceful.”

“Isn’t it?” Ohno said as he sat down. “Mama used to bring us here a lot after Papa left us. We used to sit by the pond and feed the ducks. I came here by myself when I needed to think or wanted to be alone. It’s the only place that I can be whoever I wanted to be. You see that family of ducks there?” He pointed towards a group of ducks at the pond. “It used to be only two ducks and now they have four ducklings. They are still together happily. I envy them sometimes. Do you think I’m silly, Sho, to envy some ducks?”

Ohno turned to Sho and saw the younger boy’s eyes were wet.

“Satoshi-kun – ” Sho murmured.

“What? What is it? Did I say something wrong?” He reached out to Sho, but stopped when Sho held up a hand.

“You didn’t say anything wrong,” Sho said, after taking a moment to recompose himself, “I just – I think that’s the most open thing you’ve ever said to me. And, you’re not silly at all. I envy them too.”

It wasn’t until then that Ohno remembered about the anniversary of Sho’s mother’s death. Neither of their family was perfect and he might have brought up Sho’s sad memories by saying what he said.

“Sho-kun, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset you on this day. May be I shouldn’t have asked you out today.”

“No, you didn’t upset me. I’m glad you asked me out. I used to just stay home with Papa the whole day on this day and tried to hang on to our memories. But I know Mama is in my memories already, forever. There’s no need to be sad about her passing anymore. She wouldn’t want us to be. It’s time for a change.” Sho took a sandwich in his hand. “Shall we eat?”

Ohno smiled and took a sandwich himself and both started eating. They were quiet as they ate, just enjoying the sound of silence around them. When they were done completely, they took the leftover rolls that they were too full to eat and went to the pond to feed the ducks. Ohno couldn’t help but smile at the joy that spread across Sho’s face with the simple act.

“Listen, Sho-kun, about what I said on the phone yesterday. I – ” Ohno thought this was the perfect time to bring this up.

“ – didn’t mean it. I know.” Sho cut him off without looking at him but continued to feed the ducks.

“Yes, I meant it, with all my heart.”

Sho stopped feeding the duck and turned to Ohno. He saw the older boy raised his right hand with three fingers sticking out like he was taking an oath.

“You don’t need to do that. Your buddies won’t like it that you date their favorite target. They might even make you a target if they found out. I am fine for us just being friends, if we are even that.” Sho looked down, thinking that the happy day ended too soon.

Unexpectedly he felt two hands on his shoulders and he was being turned towards Ohno in a swift move. Before he knew what was going on, his lips were covered, by Ohno’s. Instinctively he tried to push away, but within seconds he found himself reciprocating the kiss.

After they finally parted for air, Sho felt his face burning up and Ohno was looking at him smiling. “You’re so beautiful when you blushed.”

If Sho could jump into the pond and submerged into the water, he would. Since he couldn’t, he turned around and ran. He just couldn’t face Ohno, too shy and scared. He liked Ohno very much. He might even think he loved the older boy if he knew for sure how being in love felt. But he also knew that Ohno didn’t feel the same, at least he never showed him he did. He had already accepted the fact that Ohno would never love him back. The somewhat sudden change in Ohno’s attitude had taken him off guard.

“Sho-kun, wait – ” Ohno caught up with him and grabbed his arm to make him stopped. He moved in front of Sho and wrapped his arms around Sho’s waist, not allowing him to escape. “I want to be with you, I really do. Please give me a chance to prove that I’m sincere. I don’t care about what others think. I don’t need those buddies at school. They are never my friends anyway. I want you, only you.”

Sho was speechless at the confession. He felt tears filling his eyes, but they were happy tears.

“Trust me, I will never hurt you. I even told my mama about my feelings for you. She wants to invite you over for dinner sometimes.” Ohno wiped the tears from Sho’s cheeks.

“You told your mama?” Sho was even more shocked.

“Yup, on Friday night.”

“You really do want to be my boyfriend, Satoshi-kun?” Sho laughed joyfully.

“That’s what I’ve been trying to say for the past twenty minuties! And, can we drop the kun when we call each other? Just Sho and Satoshi sounded so much more intimate.”

“Satoshi-kun, Satoshi – ”

Ohno let out an undignified yelp when Sho threw himself at him, laughing and sobbing at the same time. His joy seemed to be contagious and Ohno laughed with him, kissing the wet face all over. He allowed himself to fall back and cradled Sho in his arms, breathing in his scent and smiling up at the clouds. It was all perfect. He pressed another kiss to Sho’s hair. He swore to himself that he would be beside Sho on Monday morning and protect him. He wouldn’t let anyone lay a hand on Sho ever again, for real this time.

They laid together for a long time, just soaking each other in. They held hands when they walked home. When they reached Sho’s home, they shared a sweet, slow kiss before parted reluctantly. He giggled thinking about what just happened the whole time he walked home. Everything is going to be perfect now. So he thought.

When he practically danced into his bedroom, he saw Eros waiting for him inside. He was about to tell her how happy he was now when he saw how pale Eros face was and there’s not a sign of joy.

“Is something wrong?” Ohno asked anxiously.

“Come on in. We need to talk.”
