Chapter 5

Ohno didn’t know Eros. He never saw her before that day in the cemetery. She never showed much emotion in front of Ohno. May be she was some kind of ghost or spirit which didn’t have emotions.

But the Eros he saw right at this moment was different. Her frown was noticeable. Her voice was softer and lower than usual. It’s obvious that she had something in her mind, and that couldn’t be good.

“If you have something to say, just say it already.” Ohno said as he closed the bedroom door behind him.

“You know, Ohno, you are a good person. I like you and I like Sakurai. I was distressed that you were stubborn and he had to die like that.” Eros said, leaning against the wall with her hands inside the pockets of her jeans. It’s the first time Ohno saw her made these kinds of human like gestures.

“But, you don’t have to worry about that now!” Ohno told her happily. “He’s not going to die. I will protect him. We are dating now. I promised I would make him happy and I did it.”

“I know. You did great! But – ” Eros sighed. “I just found out something that I didn’t know before.  There are some forces that are greater than my power, something I can’t control.”

“Like what?” Ohno didn’t understand. What could be more powerful than someone who could rewind time?

“Like – death.” Eros said dejectedly. “No matter what you do now, Ohno,” She moved closer to Ohno and put a hand on his shoulder, “Tomorrow, Monday – Sakurai will die.”

Ohno felt the blood drain from his face and then everything went dark.

When he finally came to the first thought he had was he had a bad dream, but when he saw Eros standing at the far side of the room, still with that regretful look on her face, he knew that it wasn’t a dream.

“Tell me you were joking. What you said isn’t true! Tell me!” Ohno jumped up from his bed and went right in front of Eros, causing her to back herself against the wall.

“I’m sorry – ”

Ohno slowly backed up and sat down on the bed, totally desperate. “I wish you’re not a girl, then I can beat the crap out of you.”

Eros wanted to say something to comfort Ohno, but couldn’t find a single word that’s appropriate.

“What’s the point? Huh?” Ohno shouted. “What’s the damn point of changing everything, turning back time, making us so happy if there's nothing I can do to save Sho's life?” He buried his face in his hands and started sobbing.

“If I had known, if I had the slightest idea that this was the case,” Eros finally spoke, with a slightly trembling voice. “I would have never brought you back here. I just can’t stop death.”

“What if I take him away from school? I won’t let him anywhere near the school and the road where he was hit.” Ohno asked desperately.

“It’s no use, unfortunately. If you keep him home, he might fall down the stairs and broke his neck. If you keep him in the school, he might choke to death while eating his lunch. Wherever he is Death will still find him. Nothing can overcome the force of Death. The Spirit of Death who came to collect the soul would not leave empty handed.”

“I can’t – ” Ohno shook his head, hands still covering his face. “I can’t watch him die again. Not again, I’m not strong enough. How can you be so cruel? Make us all happy – together – and then take him away from me again.”

Ohno felt like an idiot. He had never felt so helpless before, not even when his father left and they almost got kicked out by their landlord. He was going to make Sho happier than he had ever been in his life and might be even a future with him in it. But now not only did he not have time to accomplish his mission, he would be forever miserable watching the person he finally knew he loved died, not only once, but twice.

“Don’t give up, Ohno.” Eros knew nothing could cheer Ohno up, but she still tried. “You still have until tomorrow morning. Instead of hiding here and be despaired, why don’t you make the best out of the few hours that are left. I’m sure you want Sakurai to go with good memories, don’t you?”

Ohno knew it’s no time to be angry or felt sorry now. Eros was right. Sho didn’t have much time left. He should spend as much time with him as possible. Without saying a word, he grabbed his jacket and went out the door.

Eros sighed after Ohno left.

It’s up to you now, Ohno!

She might be able to rewind time, but she still couldn’t read or control one’s mind. There’s only so much she could reveal. Sometimes she hated what she’s doing.

It’s 9:00pm. Ohno had been walking around the block of Sho’s home for more then half an hour trying to calm himself down. He’s afraid that he would start crying the moment he saw the sweet innocent face. How could you face someone that you know is going to die in less than twelve hours, especially someone you love so much? He loved him, so much, even if he hadn’t said the words to him. But it came a little too late.

Another second ticking was another second wasted. Ohno took out his phone and pressed on the speed dialing button.

“Satoshi?” Sho was surprised to hear Ohno’s voice again so soon. They were just apart a few hours ago.

“Hey – ” Ohno had to pause to clear his clogged throat. “I missed you.” He expected the same phrase or something of the sort in return but all he heard was silence. “Um, did I call at a bad time?”

“No,” A soft voice came from the other side of the phone. “It’s just – Papa and I visited Mama’s grave earlier.”

“I’m sorry, Sho. You probably want to be with your father now. I’ll call back later.” Even though Ohno desperately wanted to be with Sho, but he couldn’t take away the time Sho spent with his father either, especially when the old man would be losing his only son in the morning.

“Papa is going out to have drinks with his buddies. He does that every year on this day. Can you come over later? I – don’t want to be alone tonight.” Sho’s voice became softer and softer and the last sentence was barely heard.

“Sure. Just call me.”

Ohno rang the door bell only a minute after he got the call from Sho. He went in as soon as Sho opened the door and headed straight to the bathroom. After he came out he told Sho that if he hadn’t opened the door for another minute he would have peed in his pants, which made Sho laughed.

“Thank you for making me laughed. After all these years I thought I could handle this, but I can’t – ” Sho laid his head on Ohno’s shoulder and closed his eyes.

Ohno wrapped his hands around Sho and gently rubbed his back. Gestural support was better than words at this moment.

“Do you think it’s silly – to still be so affected? I mean, she died when I was seven. I don’t even
remember much about her. Just how she smelled from the bottle of perfume she loved to use, and how she looked from old pictures. Sometimes I thought I remember how her laugh sounded, how it felt when she held me, but I was never sure that it’s not just my imaginations.”

“It’s not just your imaginations.” Ohno assured him. “And, no. You’re not silly. You loved your mama, and that won’t change no matter how long she had been gone. It’s only natural that it hurts and makes you feel raw inside. No one will think that you’re silly, so don’t you worry. Okay?”

“Okay.” Sho murmured. “Do you still – get raw inside – over your father?”

Ohno took a deep breath and pulled Sho closer. “Sometimes, but not because I loved him. He left us and took every single cent from mama’s savings with him. Not only that, he owed some loan shark money and Mama had to sell her gold chain, the only thing she had from grandpa, in order to pay his debt. I saw Mama cried every night. We were almost kicked out by the landlord. Ane had to quit school to help out. So, when I get raw most of it is still anger.”

“Satoshi – ” Sho turned his head to look up at Ohno. “How old were you?”

“I was eight. I wish I was older. Then I could share Mama’s burden and beat the crap out of him.” Ohno said, looking down at him.

“You’re wouldn’t. You’re not a violent person, Satoshi. You’re the a kind person, even if you didn’t think you were. The hardship in your childhood didn’t change you. Instead, it made you stronger. You’re – ” He buried his face in Ohno's chest, blushing a bright red, “It may sound ridiculous, but –I’ve always admired you.”

“That does sound ridiculous,” Ohno said flatly, then grinned when Sho looked up at him, annoyance playing across his features. Sho managed to look annoyed for five more seconds before he began giggling and buried his face in Ohno's chest once more until they both calmed and laid in the comfortable silence.

“You made me laugh again. I was never so relaxed on this day.” Sho whispered. “Umm – Satoshi?”

“Yes, Sho.” Ohno liked hearing Sho calling his name, even for no reason.

“Can you stay with me tonight?” Sho said softly, too shy to have eye contact. Sho’s father usually stayed out the whole night. This was the only night of the year that he allowed himself to go out and got drunk. His friend, who knew their family well, would take him to his place to let him sleep till the morning and sobered up before coming home. Sho usually just hung on to his body pillow and tried to cradle himself to sleep. But he had Ohno now. He wanted to be with the boy he loved on this night.

“Of course, if you want me to.” It’s certainly a pleasant surprise for Ohno. Every second with Sho was valuable. “But – will your father be okay with me staying?” Ohno asked rolling his eyes. “I don’t want him to think that I take advantage of his beloved son at this vulnerable time.”

“It’s fine. I kind of told him about you, about us.” Sho said, blushing a little, “He’d understand.”

Sho took Ohno to his bedroom and gave him something comfortable to change into. Sho tossed the body pillow aside. He didn’t need it tonight. They cuddled together in bed and talked some more, laughing on some topics, tearing on the others. It’s the first time either of them had talked so openly to another person. They lost track of how many hours had passed before Sho started to feel tired and his eyelids getting heavy. Ohno lifted Sho’s face towards him and gave him a long good night kiss.

“I love you, Satoshi.”

Ohno smiled down at Sho as gently as he knew how. “What you and I have, Sho” He said quietly. “It’s forever. You know that, don’t you?”

“I do.” Sho smiled up at him. It was so sweet that Ohno’s heart caught in his throat, “Forever – ”

Ohno kissed his forehead gently as Sho drifted off to sleep. He made sure Sho was sleeping deeply before carefully replaced himself with the body pillow and sneaked out to the living room. He sat on the edge of the couch and buried his head in his hands. The silence around him even made his quiet sobbing sound noticeable. He bit his lips to keep himself from keening. He couldn’t afford to wake up Sho. He could control his emotions no more, but nothing would stop the tears. It wasn't fair. He felt defeated, broken. It wasn't fair that he should fall so in love with Sho, only to be faced with the knowledge that he would die the next day. He had meant what he told Eros. He couldn't watch Sho die like that again. He wouldn't be able to bear it, and yet that’s what he had to face in a few hours.

After a while he dragged himself to his feet with effort and then to the bathroom without knowing what he was doing. He washed the tears tracks off his face, waited until his eyes were not so red anymore, and walked back to his room. Sho was still sleeping peacefully. The image of him lying in the pool of blood flashed back on Ohno’s mind. He couldn’t let that happen. He had to do something. But what?

“Umm – Satoshi?” Sho was only half awake when Ohno came close to the bed. “Come back to bed.”

Ohno obeyed. He slipped into the bed, sighing when Sho leaned against him and fell back to sleep almost immediately. He kissed Sho’s hair gently and closed his eyes. But, he didn't sleep.

“Love you.” Sho murmured in his sleep, “Forever.”

"Forever, Sho – ” Ohno whispered back, “Forever.”

OMFG. Why am I reading this before I am about to sleep?!
Despite the angst in this chap, I still love it!!! I somehow suspected that Eros couldn't cheat death and there I was before this chap thinking that she did. ;_; thanks for adding that part in though, it just adds more to the story. I just hope that Death makes a cameo LOLZ
