Summary:  Can Love overcome Death?

Chapter 8 Final

Ohno walked deeper and deeper into the fog, leading him to never never land. He didn’t know how long he had been walking. With no end in sight, he stopped and sat down to rest a little. Even death can be tiring after all.

He kept thinking what Eros showed him, how the little him bullied little Sho for just being kind. His tie with Sho goes way back. He couldn’t help wondering how things would be different if he had befriended with Sho instead. They would most likely grow up and be together long ago and may be both of them would still be alive and well. Eyelids began to close as exhaustion began to invade his body. He laid down and closed his eyes.

It’s not like I’m in a hurry anyway. Even dead people needs sleep.

When Ohno slowly came to, he felt something. He’s hurting everywhere. He felt pain. Where did that come from?

May be it’s a transition between dead and alive. May be he’s going through some kind of transformation to his next incarnation. Whatever that is, he wanted the pain to go away, he wanted to go back into the fog and don’t feel anything, but he couldn’t. He tried to open his eyes. He tried to make some noise. But he didn’t have the energy to do either. The pain he’s feeling now was far more intense than what he felt after the car hit him. At least then it just lasted for a few minutes before everything went black, but now the hurting had no sign of going away.

He finally experienced what death is. Soon he lost the last bit of energy to stay awake and fell back into the black, which he actually welcomed.

“Sho, why are you so upset?”

“I can’t find my music scores, Satoshi. I needed them for my recital this afternoon.”

“Oh – I’m sure you can find them.”

“No, you won’t. They have become hundreds of tiny pieces now, ha ha ha”

“Miura-kun, what do you mean? Do you know where they are?”

“What don’t you ask your boyfriend? He was the one who took them and shredded them.”

“Satoshi? How could you do that? I thought you love me. Why do you still team up with them to bully me?”

“No, I didn’t – I -- ”

“I hate you, I hate you – ”

“Sho – don’t go. Listen to me – Sho ”

Ohno woke up realizing he just had a dream. He didn’t know dead people could dream too. It would be the worst nightmare if it were true. The way he treated Sho before was still haunting him, even after death. How he wished he could take those days back. But at least he made up some of them, he comforted himself.

He wasn’t hurting as much. May be he had gone through the transition and should be totally dead now. He still had his eyes closed. What would he see if he opened his eyes, he wondered. Somewhere with eternal darkness and no light in sight, or a place full of dead souls waiting for reincarnations, but most likely he would be in hell waiting for the judgment of his sins. After careful experimentation he opened his eyes slowly and what he saw wasn’t even close to any of his anticipations. The room was somewhat dark alright, but he could clearly see the long shadows stretching across the walls and the ceiling, a familiar scene in the evening. He carefully turned his head and smiled when he saw Eros standing at the foot of his bed. Seeing Eros was much better than seeing the ugly figures with horns and spears usually associated with hell. Eros even smiled back at him gently.

He was about to talk to Eros when he saw something shocking from the corner of his eye. Sho! He saw Sho, lying on a bed next to him. There were tubes and machines hooking up to him.

“No! Sho – ” Ohno almost didn’t recognize his own voice, weak and coarse. He tried to go to Sho, but as soon as he moved the tiniest bit, the pain from all over his body sent a strong signal to his brain, demanding him to stop.

He gave up moving but immediately turned to Eros. “Why? Why is Sho here? He should not be dead. He can’t be dead!”

“Calm down, Ohno.” Eros went up to stop Ohno from breaking loose from his IVs. “Sakurai is not dead, and neither are you.”

“What?” Ohno was totally confused. “I – I thought I was supposed to be – ”

“Dead. I know, but you’re not.” Eros completed his sentence.

“How can that be? I am willing to die for him. And I’m pretty sure I was dead. I was in this place, very peaceful. I even saw you there.” Now that Ohno could think a little more clearer, the memories of seeing the little him came back.

“You were dead, for two minutes and thirty seconds.” Eros giggled. “The paramedics did their job, and with a little bit of divine intervention. But you were still pretty messed up. You’re at ICU now.”

Two minutes and thirty seconds of death. He’s sure the time he spent with Eros was much longer than that, but he had no interesting in clarifying this kind of question now. This was the first time Ohno saw Eros so relaxed and playful. He saw this as a good sign.

“But why? Why do I come back to life?” This was what he wanted to know the most at this moment. “And, what happened to Sho? He was not hurt from the accident. Why is he in ICU as well?” Ohno wanted to know Sho’s conditions more than his own.

“Well, he was here because he also joined in to save your life. Aren’t you lucky?”

“Wait, you are totally confusing me. I was the one who got hit by the car for him as far as I remembered.”

“Yes, you are correct and you saved his life right then. But you were hit pretty badly. Both of your kidneys were damaged. You’ll need a new kidney or else you’ll really die. Sho volunteered to give you one of his, and guess what, he is a perfect match!”

“Why did you let him? Just use your magic power to heal my kidneys or something, or at least stop him from doing so. I’m ready to die anyway.”

“Our power can only be used on something spiritual and abstract, not physical. And we can’t influence one’s mind either.” Eros took a glance at Sho. “He would give up anything for you, just like you would for him. He requested to recover in the same room as you. He wanted to be close to you.”

Ohno still didn’t understand. Then a horrific idea came to his mind. “They are not going to take Sho again, are they? If I’m not dead and he’s in a hospital bed, please, don’t tell me they are still taking him! Take me, they should take me!”

He was about to get up and pulled all the tubes out from his body when Eros grabbed his hands to stop him. “Don’t do anything stupid, Ohno! Or else Sho’s kidney will be wasted. You won’t die, and neither will Sho. Both of you will live! Hear me?”

“But – how?” Ohno was still unsure.

“You’ve earned it, both of you earned it. The fact that you’re willing to give up your own life and die for him, and he’s willing to give anything to save your life, had trumped the rule of the Spirit of Death. No soul will be taken this time. There is no force stronger than Love.” Eros finally explained.

“I thought you said Death was the strongest force there is.” Ohno rolled his eyes in confusion.

“Most of the time it is,” Eros moved closer to Ohno’s bedside. “But, for you and Sakurai, Love is stronger. Your sacrificing yourself for each other proved that your love for each other can overcome any obstacles. Isn’t that wonderful? Although I must say your impromptu decision to die for him was actually a very risky bet. What if it didn’t work? Then both of you would die.”

“All I could think of in that split second was not seeing him die again. Even if he had to die in the end, at least I didn’t have to witness it.”

“That’s a very lame reason to throw you life away. Luckily your bet paid off.”

“You knew it all along, didn’t you?” Ohno started to comprehend.

“Umm – yes, sort of. But I couldn’t tell you. It has to come from your own free will or else it wouldn’t work.”

“I get it,” Ohno was grateful. Although he didn’t really know how divinities work and he probably never will, but he’s glad he made the right decision at the last minute.

“Take care of each other. Love each other. You have the chance to do it now.” Eros laid a gentle kiss on Ohno’s forehead. “I’d better get going. You don’t need me anymore.”

“Thank you – again.” He felt tears in his eyes.

“No thanks are needed, Ohno.” Eros whispered as Ohno saw her fading away.

Ohno’s attention immediately turned to the person sleeping on the neighboring bed. He couldn’t move, so he could only turned his head to look at Sho. Sho must still be recovering from the surgery. His face was a little pale, but still looked gorgeous like before, with only one kidney in his body. The other one, Ohno realized, is in his body now. Wow, that’s an incredible thought. Part of Sho is living within him. It can’t be any more amazing than that. Now they have a tie between them that nothing could break, not even death. They are willing to give up anything for each other, even their lives. There could be no more doubt about the truthfulness of their love.

He didn’t know how long he was starring at Sho before he got tired himself and fell back to sleep. Knowing that he and Sho were both alive and could be together again, he was truly relaxed and allowed himself to fall into a deep sleep. No more nightmares.

When he opened his eyes again, he saw that he was being stared at this time. Sho was awake.

“Sho – ” Ohno said with a still sleepy voice. He was confused and blinked in surprise when he looked carefully at his boyfriend and saw trails of tears on Sho’s cheeks. “Sho, what’s wrong?”

“You’re such an idiot, Satoshi – ” Sho said quietly, tears still streaming down. “I was so scared of losing you.”

“I’m sorry – ” Ohno apologized. Sho’s tears were clearly his weakness. “Don’t cry, please – ” Ohno wanted to go over to Sho and hugged him, but his body wouldn’t cooperate. “Thank you, for saving this idiot.”

“How do you know?” Sho said rolling his eyes.

“Oh, umm, that – well, a nurse was here earlier before you were awake. She told me.” Ohno wiped a sweat but was proud of himself for the fast thinking. He couldn’t have told Sho he knew because Eros told him.

“Don’t you dare do something like this again! I warn you. Or else – ” Sho moaned on the pain from the surgery wound as the anesthesia winded down.

“Are you alright? Should I call a nurse?” Ohno almost forgot that he’s also a patient with series injuries. He gasped on the pain caused by his movement.

Both tried to laugh seeing each other’s disabilities, but it made them hurt even more and they wanted to laugh even more. It took them a few minutes to calm themselves down.

“Promise me you won’t do stupid things like this ever again.” Sho try to speak in a calmer tone. His voice still trembled. “You may not be so lucky this time, and I don’t have another kidney to give you.”

Ohno smiled at the boy he loved so much. “I promise. I’ll have to spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Now that I have a part of you in me, we are forever tied together.”

Sho blushed on Ohno’s remarks. “Then you’d better get better soon, and take good care of my kidney.”

“Please be careful at school before I can return to school to protect you. I’m afraid those guys will hurt you.” Ohno said worriedly. His long recovery ahead meant he couldn't be there to protect Sho.

“Don’t worry. They had been expelled from school. Many witnesses saw them pushed us and came forward about their bullying.” Sho revealed what happened after the accident.

“Just expelled? They should be arrested for killing you.” Recalling the scene of Sho dying in his arms aroused Ohno’s anger.

“I’m not dead. Nobody died. Their future will be ruined if they were arrested. I hope they’ll learn their lesson this time. Everyone deserves a second chance. Don’t you think so?”

May be Sho was right. If he could be given another chance to make things right, the other boys should have that chance too. He just hoped they would make good use of it.

“So just focus on getting better. I’ll be alright.” Sho was so forgiving. It makes him love the boy even more.

Ohno was somewhat relieved. “I’ll always worry about you. You need to get well too.” He sighed. “I wish I can kiss you now. Your kisses are my best medicine.”

Sho chuckled, trying not to use his abdominal muscles too much. “You are going to need a lot more than my kisses. But Satoshi, thank you, I love you.”

“I love you too.”

“Forever?” Sho asked quietly.

“Forever,” Ohno confirmed with a smile.

I cried about three times over this. I am really weak against death and reading about Sho and Ohno dying just broke my heart. I felt Ohno's frustration, his desperation when Eros told him there's nothing he could do to change Sho's fate and my heart broke for him piece by piece as he tried to live through Sho's final hours. I kind of expected what he did--rather, I actually hoped he'd do just that. But everything else from that point really worked into a pleasant twist for me. I am really glad it ended well for the two of them. <3<3<3

I am eagerly awaiting your next Yama pair series. ^__^♥
