Part 5

Forgive me, can you? If not, then let it be. I don’t want to lie to you, nor I have the energy to say anything against my will. At this moment, I really really want a shoulder to lean on, to rest one. My hand did hurt by your tight grip, but I don’t want to let go – at least, I can feel I am really alive, and you are really by my side.

It’s so absurd. How many people envy me for who I am -- the favorite son of the king, a possible future ruler of the kingdom?! But if I died today, I’d only have you by my side. To Mother, I am most likely only a pawn in her set. To Father, I’m just one of his many sons; without me, he might be sad for a few days, then I will be slowly forgotten….

To survive in the palace, there are only two possibilities. One is if you are never a threat to anybody. So nobody will notice you and you are allowed to continue to exist. The other is when you are a threat to everybody and you always have to get the upper hand. If you don’t let you guard down and remain strong, then you will continue to exist. I have no choice but be the latter type, because of Mother, and now, because of him…..

“Onii-san!” I heard Masaki’s voice coming from the outside. It’s a pleasant surprise that Masaki came to see me. Although I like Masaki as well, I understand he grew up with Jun after all. He is also in an awkward position. I feel that Jun and I are at two ends of a balance and Masaki is looking at us from the middle. None of us dare to make a move. If anyone makes the slightest movement, someone will get hurt, just like what happened yesterday.

“Masaki – ” Seeing him tripped at the threshold, I reflexively tried to get out of bed to help him, but realized too late that my legs are too weak to even stand up. I thought I would tumble, only to find myself fell into the embrace of Sho….I suddenly feel my face heating up…..

“Satoshi – how do you feel?!” Hearing the concerned voice of Masaki, I raised my head and saw him looking at me with tears in his eyes. I must have scared him. I tried to pull away from Sho so I could go and comfort Masaki, but he wouldn’t let go. I stared at him in confusion. Then he got flustered and helped me back to my bed before leaving the room without a word.

Masaki got bewildered but came to my bedside nonetheless. He was a little quiet at first. Having witnessed what happened in Jun’s palace yesterday, I know he’s well aware of the situation. I was surprised Jun even let him come. “I’m sorry – ”

“Don’t be – Masaki” I don’t blame him. He is merely surviving in this cruel world. “Let’s talk about something merrier, I have ordered your favorite snacks – ”

Do you have to be like that? Your Highness, I finally have to admit! Even though you never smile at me, even though I’m only an obligation to you, I still can’t disregard you. I can’t stand to see you get hurt, I can’t stand to see you frown, I can’t stand to see you sigh, I can’t endure your sufferance…..I feel like I’m going crazy!

But, seeing you with Nino-sansei and Prince Masaki, I am happy and relieved at the bottom of my heart. Because I can tell, your laughter is genuine when you are with them, despite it’s not because of me. Since accepting this fact, I finally can look up to the sky, and smile.

This time, I didn’t wait for summons outside your room. I knew, these were moments of happiness that belonged to you, however short they might be. I wondered around the garden, feeling a little lonely. Before I came, were you walking alone on this stony path as well? I smiled to myself wryly on this thought. What’s happening to me today? Why am I having these strange feelings and thoughts? The handkerchief with your blood on it is still in my pocket, which made my heart a little heavy.

I continued to walk ahead, but ran into the person whom I didn’t want to see.

“Good afternoon. Your Highness.” I bowed before Prince Jun, calmly stared at the person who brought so much pain to him.

“Prince Satoshi – how is he?” Although his tone was soft and gentle, he still has the elite temperament that he was born with. Prince is on his brows, and ruler in his bearing. That kind of angular pediment, that overbearing attitude, is so different from him.

“You Highness should understand better than anyone!” I forcefully suppressed the roar of anger inside me. “Prince Satoshi’s stomach ache looks to be come from unsuitable diet yesterday. Wonder if he had eaten something bad or drunk something bad. But at last His Highness retrieved his life back, and he has Your Highness’s blessings to thank!” Prince Jun was not discontented from what I said, only lowering his head a bit.

“If Your Highness don’t have anything else, please pardon me. I have to go to get medicine for His Highness.” I just want to find some excuse to leave. I didn’t want to linger with him anymore.

“Nii-san – he – never mind, I’ll just go to see him myself.” Prince Jun headed towards Prince Satoshi’s room, but I stood right in front of him to block his way. He looked at me in shock. “What? You dare to block my way?”

“His Highness needs to rest. That’s an order from Sansei. He is not suitable for any irritation. If Your Highness wants to visit him, it’s best for you to come back some other time.” I stared right at him, not showing any sign of backing down.

“I really want to know how you can stop me!” He quickly set into an attack position. I, of course, wouldn’t show any weakness and got into position myself.

Not for long, we had exchanged a couple dozens of strokes, but neither of us was getting the upper hand. During the fight, his handkerchief fell out of my pocket. Careless about a hard kick coming my way, I rolled to take the handkerchief away from underneath his foot.

“That is – Nii-san’s blood?” Although his kick still got me on my shoulder, but then he immediately stopped attacking and looked at me in shock. His voice was also trembling. I didn’t answer him, just stared at him angrily.

“I ask you is that Nii-san’s blood?” He was furious.

“That’s your doing, wasn’t it? Why still pretend you don’t know?!” I, too, couldn’t suppress my rage any longer and yelled back at him. The anger and frustration I sustained for the past few days surged out from inside. “You want to kill me, don’t you? He is not here now. Just come and get me!”

“You think I don’t dare to?! If it wasn’t for you, how would I hurt my brother?” Prince Jun did not keep his usual calm. He drew his sword from its sheath and pointed it straight at me.

“Stop it! Guard, take Sakurai Sho away to wait for his punishment!” That familiar voice – I turned around – it’s really him, being helped out by a panicky Prince Masaki.

To be continued.....
