Chapter 3

“Sakurai-san, please come into my office” Sho’s boss said loudly from inside his office. Sho can hear it from his desk three rooms away.

“Yes, boss. What’s up?” Sho asked as he walked into his boss’s office.

“There will be an Economics Summit in New York next month. Many economists from different countries will be there to discuss global recessions and it's impact on financial markets. Our newspaper wants to do a special report about it. Mainly focus on what steps each country take to recover from this crisis. ” He explains as Sho listens carefully.

“I want you to be in charge of this special report. Go to New York, travel arrangements have been made for you.”

This was one year ago.

So Sho was in New York city, in January, when this winter had exceptionally cold and snowy weather. He hasn’t seen that much snow for a long time, not ever since in high school when their soccer team played the national tournament in Hokkaido’s Sapporo Dome. That was the first, and only, trip he took with Ohno.

Sho shooked his head, trying to get rid of what’s on his mind. Why does everything has to come back to his memories with Ohno?

This day he finishes the work he had planned to do early. It’s only 6pm. What can he do? Go back to the hotel room to watch CNN and order room service? He has been doing that for the past two nights. Tonight he wants to go out, get some fresh (cold) air.

He went to Time Square, where it was very crowded. Partly because it’s a Saturday night, and partly because it is not snowing tonight. Still cold, but clear and dry.

He ate in a restaurant around the corner. He didn’t pay attention to what food it’s serving, or how expensive it might be. He just went in because he saw a few tables with only one person and no companion. All other restaurants he passed by have either couples or friends or big groups dining. It’s odd for him to go in and sit at a table alone.

It was an Italian restaurant that he went in. He ordered some spaghetti and a glass of red wine. The restaurant was small, but nicely decorated. The light was dim, but there are candles in every table. May be it’s bound to create romantic atmosphere, but the several one-person tables in there made the mood pretty dull.

He was taking his time to eat. It’s not that he has any place he needed to be, or any person he is anticipating to meet. He can stay here till the restaurant closes if he dares to.

Then in a split second’s time, a flash of a familiar figure outside the restaurant attracted his attention. He freezes for several seconds with his mouth wide opened, some spaghetti was still dangling from it. Instinctively he got up and ran towards the exit, hoping he could still catch up on the receding figure. Then he realized he hadn’t paid the bill. He put his hands inside his pocket and reached for whatever money he could grab and put on the table and stormed out without looking back. He didn’t know how much money he put down, not that he cares, as long as he knows it’s enough for the food he ordered.

He went out and, without thinking, ran towards the direction which he saw the figure went. He turned his head to all directions as he ran, hoping to find what he thought he saw, what he hoped he saw.

He must have ran five or six blocks, looking, searching, hoping, before he ran out of breath and had to stop. He never thought he could run that far that fast. He had heard that desperation could bring out someone’s supernatural power and potential. Now he honestly believe that myth is true.

But to his disappointment, he didn’t find what he was looking for.

After a few minutes to catch his breath, a sad bitter smile appeared on his face.

“It’s not possible. What was I thinking?!” Sho mumbles. “He is thousands of miles away. I must be hallucinating.”

He made a deep sigh and started to walk. But where is he now? He had no idea what location he’s at. He felt very tired all of a sudden. It’s not from the running, he knows, but somehow he is exhausted. May be it was the ups and downs of the over excitement and dreariness that drained him emotionally.

He decided to take a taxi back to the hotel. He is on some residential area where traffic is quiet. He has to walk back to more populous streets before he can catch any taxi.

He walked slowly towards some neon lights, where he thinks may be a more crowded area. Then he saw a car approaching his direction. It’s a yellow car – a taxi, with a lite top light to show it’s vacant.

With a sigh of relief, he thought he doesn’t have to walk any further. He waved at the taxi and stopped walking to wait for it. When the taxi stopped just a few feet away from him and the door swung opened. He was ready to get inside the taxi. Because he was tired, his motion was slow.

Suddenly, a person came out of nowhere and jumped into the taxi. Sho was stunned, but managed to keep that person from closing the car door after he jumped in.

“Excuse me, but I waved at the taxi first ---“ Sho protested to the person in the taxi back seat. The person turned his head towards Sho. “Sorry, I didn’t see –“ He said, but didn’t finish his sentence.

Both of them were astonished.
