Chapter 6

Ohno woke up the next morning with a bad hangover. His head feels like it is about to explode. He shook his head hoping that it would shake the headache away, with no luck. The clock on the bedside showed it's 8 o'clock. He looked around the room which does not look familiar.

“Where am I? What happened last night?” He didn't seem to remember.

Not until he saw Sho sleeping on the couch that he knew he was in Sho's room.

Sho was still asleep. Ohno could see the steady ups and downs of Sho's chest from his breathings. This is the first time he sees Sho's sleeping face but it seems incredibly attractive to him. He got out of bed and walked quietly towards Sho, not wanting to wake him. Somehow he wanted to look at this sleepy face longer and closer.

When he was next to the couch, he knelt down next to the sleeping Sho. He gently brushed Sho's hair away from his face so he could take a clearer look. Sho's facial features are so perfect, thick symmetric eyebrows, right sized nose, cherry like lips and rosy cheeks, probably from the heavy drinkings last night. He never noticed Sho was that charming and handsome before.

He leaned over and kissed Sho's lips gently. After a short pause, he kissed Sho again. This time with a little more passion but still delicate enough not to wake Sho up.

Why did I kiss him?

He was surprised by his own action. But somehow the kisses feel right, even more right than when he kissed Hiroko. The pleasure and satisfaction he had from it is undeniable.

He recalled the good times he had with Sho these past few days. It seemed he had come to know Sho all over again. He really enjoyed the younger man's company, and more than that, even wanting to spend more time with him. He hadn't been that happy for a long time. All these years there was some kind of emptiness inside him that he could not explain nor fulfill. Suddenly, at this moment, he felt that he had found the answer.

Why didn't I notice it sooner? Damn it!

The sound of the alarm clock interrupted the silence in the room.

Sho opened his eyes seeing Ohno (pretending) to go turn off the alarm. Ohno actually didn't want Sho to know that he was so close to him.

“Oh, you're already awake. Good morning. Did you sleep well?” Sho greeted Ohno with a still half asleep voice.

“Good morning. Sorry I occupied your bed last night. Thanks for caring for me.” Ohno replied, trying to keep his normal tone. His headache from the hangover had gone. He didn't know when, probably after kissing Sho.

Both of them were trying to recollect the bittersweet feelings of the kisses they stole from each other's lips. Both of them treasured the moments very much, but they had no idea their feelings for each other are mutual.

When they were having their morning coffee, Sho made another attempt to find out what had driven Ohno to such great saddness.

“About last night. Do you want to talk about what was bothering you?”

Ohno paused and turned away from Sho, not wanting Sho to see his distressed expressions.

“It's my father's business. We are very close to bankruptcy. I came here to try to salvage some of our customers but in vein.” Ohno usually doesn't like to tell others about his family's problem, but somehow he doesn't want to hide it from Sho.

“But an old friend of my father may be able to help us.” Ohno continued.

“Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. Hope your father's friend can help you get pass this crisis.” Sho couldn't find any better words of comfort to say.

“His daughter and I are – engaged.” Ohno found it hard to reveal this to Sho after realizing his feelings for him.

“En – engaged?! Oh, con – gratulations!” Sho only came up with these words when he couldn't even find the strength to stand on his feet anymore. He was fortunate to get support from the table next to him keeping him from falling to the floor. He felt his head spinning and his body shaking. This is how it's going to end with him and Ohno? No, it can't be. He refuses to believe that's how it ends before they even have a chance to begin. He is resentful, clenching his fists wanting to hit something or someone. He wanted to hit himself.

But he heard it loud and clear. Ohno is engaged to be married!

Does he love her?

He wanted to ask, so badly, but what rights does he have to question Ohno about his marriage or his love life? He is just a – long lost friend – who Ohno reunited with several days ago for all he knows.

It's over. It's all over.

All this time Ohno remained silent. He doesn't seem to have the excitement one should have when announcing his engagement. But Sho was too overwhelmed by his own upsetting emotions to notice.

Ohno was going through a tidal wave of emotions of his own. Working in his father’s business was not his wish in the first place, let alone having to deal with all the financial crises and client relations. He is more of a self-centered person, socializing is never his strong area. These past few days with Sho were probably the most relaxing days he had for years. May being totally relaxed is how he’s able to realize his true feelings, his true feelings for Sho.

About this engagement, he has dated her for three years now, almost ever since her father started investing in his father’s business. She obviously had a crush on him and tried very hard to get close to him. She is a nice person, beautiful, educated and gentle. She would do anything Ohno said without objections. Ohno is comfortable around her, and he thinks he like her. Yes, like, that’s all Ohno is sure about. Does he love her? May be, may be not. Ohno isn’t sure himself, because he had never experienced what real love is.

“When are you going to propose to Hiroko?” Ohno’s father suddenly brought up the subject last month.

“Propose?” Ohno had never thought about getting married “There’s really no hurry. We are happy with how things are.”

“No hurry? You two have been dating for three years, and you are almost thirty. Do you think she will wait for you forever?” Ohno’s father is not satisfied with the answer he is hearing.

“Satoshi, listen to me –“ His father’s tone turned serious. “Our business is not doing well. You should be well aware of that. And you should know how important Hiroko's father's back up is to us.”

Ohno understands where his father is going with this conversation. He can't deny that their business depends heavily on Hiroko's father's support. He can't find a reason not to go a step further with his relationship with Hiroko, afterall he does feel good when he is with her. A marriage between the two families can reassure permanent support from Hiroko's family to their business.

So they are engaged. He didn't remember how he proposed, but the moment he hinted about marriage to Hiroko, she didn't waste a second to say 'yes'.

Hiroko and both fathers wanted the wedding to take place soon, but Ohno excused that he wanted the business crises to settle before thinking about the wedding, so they can enjoy the special moment wholeheartedly.

Deep down inside he still feels that something is missing in him, but he didn't know what it was then.

He knows now, he knows what’s missing from his heart, but what could he do?

This marriage is too important for their business. It is something that his father had worked hard all his life for. It’s everything their family has. He can’t afford to be the one who destroy it. He knew how devastated it would be to his family, to his father, if the business fails. He won’t allow that to happen, especially not because of him.

Besides, Hiroko is a nice girl. He knows she loves him very very much. Breaking off this engagement will break her heart. He had promised himself that he would try to love her back when they got engaged. He can’t break this promise.

Little does he know that he is breaking the heart of someone else.
